In collaboration with Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS), Regent University is reaching out to the Hispanic population in Hampton Roads to support young men and women ready to work toward a better future by pursuing education. At a recent prayer breakfast for local Hispanic pastors, Regent's Center for Latino Leadership (CLL) announced its partnership with VBCPS—a campaign called Education Today.
The goal of Education Today is to engage first-generation college students and their parents through workshops aimed toward educating and preparing them for the college application process—from taking exams like the SAT and ACT, to writing an admissions essay and more.
"Basically, we are looking to promote education and get our students college-ready," explained Dr. Marcela Chaván-Matviuk, director of CLL.
The prayer breakfast provided an opportunity for community leaders to come together and talk about what is happening in their churches. The meeting attracted the highest attendance for a Hispanic prayer breakfast at Regent, with more than 15 pastors and leaders in attendance.
During the breakfast, the pastors and Chaván-Matviuk shared about upcoming events in the Hampton Roads region, including a visit to Washington, D.C., to pray for the U.S. Senate, a continental worship initiative called Adora America to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in conjunction with the Global Day of Worship, and a new Christian Spanish radio station, 660 AM. Only a few months old, the station has already attracted a significant following.
"The pastors appreciated this special time of fellowship, which allowed them to reinforce ties with their colleagues and prepare for the future," Chaván-Matviuk said. "They are looking forward to the next prayer breakfast in the spring."
