Trauma Team Deploys to Help Hurricane Victims

By Rachel Bender | November 6, 2012

In response to the continuing recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy, Regent University's Trauma Team is deploying two teams composed of students, faculty and alumni to travel to the affected areas to help. Working under the umbrella of the Green Cross Academy for Traumatology, teams will be deployed to work with hurricane victims in the Toms River area of New Jersey.

Although Regent's Trauma Team—run by the university's Center for Trauma Studies—has been on standby to assist at other disasters four times, this deployment to New York marks the first time the team has been activated by Green Cross. Beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 6, the first team will travel north. A second team will leave next week to relieve the others. Dr. Benjamin Keyes, director of the Center for Trauma Studies, will lead the first group. Dr. Sherry Todd, program coordinator for Regent's master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, is slated to lead the second team.

The Center for Trauma Studies, housed within Regent's School of Psychology & Counseling, provides students with hands-on training to serve the needs of individuals affected by trauma both in the United States and abroad. Its goal is to not only teach students, but also to give them an opportunity to apply what they have learned in serving victims of trauma both in the United States and abroad, fulfilling the mission of Regent University: train Christian leaders to change the world.

Regent's affiliation with the Green Cross, an international organization specializing in training teams to work with traumatized victims and their caretakers, is part of an ongoing relationship. Much of the coursework and training offered by the Center for Trauma Studies is connected with the Green Cross's certification programs.
