DATABASES & INDEXES

FOR RELIGION RESEARCH


       

       Databases are a key for locating quality resources.  The following databases & printed indexes focus on the fields of religion, theology, ministry, biblical studies, and missions. 
 
       All of these databases are available to Regent University students, faculty & staff.  Many can be accessed from the Regent Library Databases By Title homepage; others are available on the stand-alone pc in the library reference area.  Availability is noted for each of databases.  Most of the printed indexes are located in the reference area of the library.


       Use the three databases marked with an asterisk first. These are all available from off-campus on the Regent University Library Databases By Title page.
 
       There are other important general databases & indexes on the Regent Library Databases By Title list that cover works in religion and theology and these should also be consulted.  These general databases include WorldCat, Global Books in Print, and Digital Dissertations, among others.  For more assistance, ask at the Reference Desk.

 

Anchor Bible Dictionary -- This cd-rom program, in the Logos Research System format, comprises the six-volume Anchor Bible Dictionary in print and is searchable by keyword or topic.
      The Anchor Bible Dictionary cd-rom is available on the stand-alone pc in the reference area of the library.

*ATLA Religion Database -- The ATLA Religion Database is a multi-lingual index containing citations for scholarly journal articles, essays and book reviews in the fields of religion and theology from 1946 on.  It can be searched by author, title, subject, and keyword.  It has over 1,200,000 records and contains full-text articles in selected publications.  Full-text items are flagged with the icon," ."

BibleWorks 6.0 --This program is designed for Bible research, exegesis, and exposition.  It has the Hebrew Bible, the Greek Septuagint, the Latin Vulgate, the Greek New Testament, lexicons, dictionaries, and  translations of the Bible in 20 languages. 
      BibleWorks cd-rom is available on the stand-alone pc in the library reference area.

*Christian Periodical Index  -- This database indexes over 100 evangelical publications, journal articles, and book reviews from 1956 to the present. It can be searched by author, title, subject, and keyword. There is no full-text.

Elenchus Bibliographicus Biblicus of Biblica -- Published annually, the Elenchus is an extensive bibliography of scholarly international books and journal articles covering the fields of biblical studies, theology, pastoral theology, and canon law.
     Available here on Virginia Beach campus and possibly off campus.

Encyclopedia Judaica -- This cd-rom program comprises the entire 16 volume edition of the printed Encyclopaedia Judaica, with updates, covering the entire gamut of Jewish scholarship, history, and opinion.  The graphics and audio clips are impressive.
      The Encyclopedia Judaica cd-rom is easy to use and is available on the stand-alone pc in the Library reference area.

Logos Bible Software -- This multi-featured Bible research program contains several Bible versions including the New International Version, Hebrew Old Testament, Greek New Testament, the Abridged edition of Kittel, the New Bible Dictionary, and a host of other Bible research tools. 
      The Logos Bible Software cd-rom is available on the stand-alone pc in the library reference area.

Missions 20:21 Library & Ministry Mapping -- From Global Mapping International, the 20:21 Library includes books, full-text directories, factual reports, papers, bibliographies, maps and graphics for missions research.  
      Available on the stand-alone pc in the reference area of the library. Help screens are available throughout the programs.

New Testament Abstracts -- This work indexes over 500 scholarly articles and books in New Testament studies, with an abstract for each item so the researcher has a better idea of its usefulness.  Indexes, including a scripture index, appear at the end of the year for each volume.

Old Testament Abstracts -- This work indexes scholarly articles and books in Old Testament studies with an abstract for each item so the user has a better idea of its usefulness.  Indexes, including an extremely useful scripture index, appear at the end of the year for each volume.

ProQuest Religion -- Search full-text articles in 100 scholarly and popular publications by keyword(s) or phrase from 1986 to the present.  Almost everything is full text.

*Religious & Theological Abstracts -- Search abstracts of articles in religion and theology from over 400 scholarly journals by author, title, or keyword using this program available on the Regent Library Databases & Online Indexes page.  Coverage is from 1958 on.  Articles with Christian, Jewish, and other world religions' perspectives are included.

Research in Ministry (RIM) Online -- Search D.Min. Projects, 1981 to the present, From Schools of Theology Throughout the United States and Canada.  You can Search by Author, title, project advisor, institution, or Subject.  In addition, an abstract for each project is included when one has been provided by the author.

      Requests for Loans or Photocopies of any of the Documents Should be Directed to the Degree-granting Institution. Contact Information for these Institutions may be found on the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada's web site.

Sage 4 in 1 Library/Master Christian Library -- This cd-rom contains over 220 Christian classics including the works of John Calvin, John Wesley, Martin Luther, the early church fathers, Adam Clarke, and others.  Search the entire collection by keyword or combine terms to locate relevant material on your topic. 
      Available on the stand-alone pc in the reference area of the library.

Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) -- The TLG full-text digital library contains virtually all ancient Greek texts from the period between Homer (8th century B.C.) and A.D. 600, including the Greek New Testament and a large number of texts from between A.D. 600 and 1453.  Search by Greek word in an individual work or all the works by a certain author.

      Visit the official Thesaurus Linguae Graecae homepage site here. This site includes a listing of all the authors whose works can be found in the program and general information about the program.

TREN -- Available directly on the web at http://www.tren.com or the library list of databases, the Theological Research Exchange Network (TREN) is a library of over 7,800 theological thesis/dissertation titles and conference papers from several academic societies including the Evangelical Theological Society and the Society for Pentecostal Studies.  Search by author, title, or subject; then place an order online.  Paper copies are .15 cents per page or microfiche copy is available for $5.00 each.

Catholic Periodical & Literature Index -- Indexes a selected list of Catholic periodicals and books for adults by Catholic authors, international in scope.  Published six times a year.
      Shelved in the reference area of the library, 1984-    .

Current Thoughts & Trends -- A monthly compilation  offering summaries of important articles and news from over 75 Christian periodicals, key secular magazines, and denominational publications.
      Regent Library has 1990-.

Elenchus Bibliographicus Biblicus of Biblica -- Published annually, the Elenchus is an extensive bibliography of scholarly international books and journal articles covering the fields of biblical studies, theology, pastoral theology, and canon law.
     Available in the reference area of the library, 1979-, and bound annually with the Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses.

New Testament Abstracts -- This work indexes over 500 scholarly articles and books in New Testament studies, with an abstract for each item so the researcher has a better idea of its usefulness.  Indexes, including a scripture index, appear at the end of the year for each volume.
      Available in the reference area of the library, vol. 1, 1956-.

Old Testament Abstracts -- This work indexes scholarly articles and books in Old Testament studies with an abstract for each item so the user has a better idea of its usefulness.  Indexes, including an extremely useful scripture index, appear at the end of the year for each volume.
      Available in the reference area of the library, vol. 1, 1978-.
