USING THE ATLA RELIGION DATABASE

ACTION: RESULTS:
1.)  Start at the Regent Library homepage, http://www.regent.edu/
general/library/home.cfm.  Under "Research Tools" click on "Databases" then at the top, "A." Select ATLA Religion Database from the Databases & Article Searching page.
A "Welcome to Regent University Library" screen displays asking for you to put in your Regent e-mail user name and password.
2.)  Enter your Regent University e-mail user name and password. The ATLA Religion Database Advanced Search Screen displays.

3.)  At the top left of the screen click on the Help icon. A "Help" window screen displays.
4.)  Under "Special Search Methods" click on "Adjacent terms (proximity)." An adjacent terms (proximity) help screen displays.
5.) Under "W (with)" read the explanation: "Type w or with between two terms to search for records containing both terms, in the order typed, with no words between them." Phrases can be entered with a "w" between the words.
6.)  Click on the red X at the top right of the Help menu window. The Help menu window closes, re-displaying the Advanced Search screen.
7.)  In the first white box next to the words, "Search for:" type in, women w ministers

8.)  In the white box below, on the next line, type Bible A password authentication screen displays
9.)  In the white box directly to the right, click on the blue down arrow box and click on, "subject." This will search for the word "Bible" as a subject term.
10.)  Scroll down a little bit and note the "Language No Limit" box.  Click on the blue down arrow box and click on, "English." A This will limit our search to just materials in English.
11.)  In the "Limit to: Document Type" box, click on the blue down arrow box and select, "Article." This will limit our search to just journal or magazine articles. [ATLA has book reviews and essays also]
12.) Ignore the "Record Stream," and "Product Code" limit boxes.  
13.)  Scroll down a little more and note the "Rank by:" box.  Click on the blue down arrow and select, "Relevance." This will cause the article records that have the most frequent use of our search terms, i.e., women w ministers Bible, to display first.

14.)  Click on the gray search button below the "Rank by:" box. The ATLA program executes our search and displays citation records for journal or magazine articles in English ranked by relevance.

15.)  Locate the journal article, "Women Ministers in the New Testament Church" by Charles E. Cerling. Click on the hyperlink title. Clicking on the hyperlink title will cause a detailed record for this article to display.

16.)  Scroll down to note the author, title of the article, and source areas on the record.  Note the information in the source area: the title of the journal, the volume number, the issue number, the date, "Sum 1976," and the pages, 209-215.  
17.)  Scroll back up to near the top of the screen and find the "Full Text:" line under the words, "Get This Item."  Click on the blue hyperlink, "View Full Text on remote site (ATLA)."

The full-text of the article displays.  Note "Next Page," "Page #" box, and directional arrows at the bottom for navigation.
18.) At the top right of the screen in the black margin area, click on , the return back arrow icon. The detailed record screen re-displays.
19.)  At the top left of the screen in the blue margin area, click on the "List of Records" hyperlink button. The "List of Records" screen re-displays.
20.)  At the left-hand side of the screen, click inside the small boxes beside the citation numbers, "1, 2, and 3." Check marks display indicating that these citation records are marked.
21.)  At the top of the screen in the blue margin area, click on the "Marked Records" hyperlink button. The three marked citation records display on one screen in a continuous display.
22.)  Locate the "Detailed" hyperlink next to the gray "Clear Marks" button.  Click on the "Detailed" hyperlink. All three marked citation records in detailed format display on a single continuous screen.
23.)  If this was a real search you could click on either the "E-mail" or "Print" buttons to own your search results.  
24.)  In the upper right area of the screen locate the "Exit" button and exit out of the program. Clicking on the exit button is a courtesy for those who may be waiting for an open line to get on to the ATLA program.
