GUIDE TO STAT-USA
STAT-USA
is a service of the U.S. Department of Commerce. It provides
business, economic, and trade data. STAT-USA is divided into two
main sections: State of the Nation provides financial and economic
data primarily dealing with the U.S. domestic economy. GLOBUS/NTDB
covers current and historical trade information for the
international market. GLOBUS (Global Business Opportunities)
offers daily trade leads and historical trade leads for up to
three months. NTDB provides access to the Country Commercial
Guides, Market Research Reports, Best Market Reports, U.S. import
and export statistics, and over 75 other reports and programs. The
International Trade Library is a collection of over 40,000
documents related to international trade.
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS For International Business information, choose the GLOBUS/NTDB website. Market and Country Research focuses on international information. To find COUNTRY INFORMATION, choose the Country Commercial Guides. The Country Commercial Guides are part of the initiative of the Trade Promotion Coordinating Committee (TPCC). Country Commercial Guides provide information on the business and economic conditions of foreign countries. Choose a country from the list for information on executive summary, economic trends and outlook, political environment, marketing U.S. products, leading sectors for U.S. exports and investments, trade regulations, investment climate, trade and project financing, and business travel. To use the "search" function, enter the name of the country in the search box and click "search" button. This will return a list of all documents that contain the country name. STAT-USA accepts Boolean operators in searching. For example, a search on "czech republic or slovakia" will yield all documents containing either the term "czech republic" or the term "slovakia". Searching "czech republic and slovakia" will yield only those documents that contain both terms. To find MARKET RESEARCH REPORTS, search International Marketing Insight Reports, Industry Sector Analysis Reports, Market Research Reports Historical Archive, and Best Market Reports. International Marketing Insight Reports, arranged by date and country, give the latest marketing and economic information available. Industry Sector Analysis Reports are arranged by country and give the latest industry information. This report lists the best sales prospects, trade promotion, opportunities, and in-country contacts. Market Research Reports Historical Archive contains archival reports for up to three years arranged by country or region. The Whats New in International Market Research lists the most current reports. Use the "search" function to find specific country and product information. For example, "poland and electronics" will retrieve documents containing both terms. If uncertain about the spelling of a country, use the box "find word variations as defined by thesaurus." To search for a product without specifying a country, use the "search" function and enter the product name. The results will produce all documents containing the specified product and any country. Best Market Reports cover every industry sector cited as "Best Prospects" by one or more U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service posts in the Country Commercial Guides. The report includes statistics from selected countries on various industries and includes data on imports and exports from the U.S. and receptivity to U.S. products. Using the "search" function will limit the results to specific products and countries. For TRADE LEADS, Todays Global Business Opportunity Leads contains the latest reports from Commerce Business Daily Leads, Defense Logistics Agency Leads, State and Local Government Procurements, Trade Opportunity Program Leads, International Market Insight Reports, and Agricultural Trade Leads. Each of these reports contains trade leads arranged by date. These can also be searched by commodity and/or country. Current and Historical Trade Leads provide older lead reports. To find EXPORT AND IMPORT STATISTICS, use the International Trade Statistics section. Choose exports or imports by country or commodity. Note that "0\1" means that the value is "0"; "0\3" means that the value is unavailable. To use the "search" function, enter the commodity and country. For example, "livestock or feed and belgium" will produce results that contain livestock and belgium or food and belgium. To find information on particular exporters, use the Contacts sections. Commercial Service International Contacts arranged alphabetically by name of firm includes contact person information and products arranged by harmonized code. Export Yellow Pages lists export firms and their products. Although arranged alphabetically, use the "search" function to see what firms deal with a specific product. For example, "cellular phones" will list the export firms dealing with cellular phones. State-by-State Export Resource Listing lists contact persons or agencies to assist with trade questions. THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE LIBRARY is a comprehensive collection of over 40,000 documents related to international trade. Documents cover all areas of exporting and importing, ranging from A Basic Guide to Exporting to the World Factbook. While reports are arranged alphabetically, the "search" function allows keyword searching by subject, commodity, or country. The more precise your search terms, the better your results. For example, by using the search term "Japan" and not limiting the number of results, over 1800 documents are returned. Narrowing my search to "Japan and livestock" produces 142 results. Further narrowing to "Japan and livestock and feed" gives me 41 documents. Searches can be narrowed even further by ranking the relevancy of the terms. To do this, use the qualifier "termweight" plus a ranking number from 1-100, where 100 is the most important term. For example, in the search box, use "termweight 80 Japan or termweight 20 China and livestock and feed" to find documents that contain the terms Japan or China and livestock and feed, but listing the documents containing Japan first. The number of results returned can also be limited by using the results returned options. STATE OF THE NATION For information on the economy of the United States, choose the State of the Nation databases. Basic areas of interest are General Economic Indicators, covering such areas as Consumer Price Index, Gross Domestic Product, Producer Price Index, U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes, and U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services. Other areas of interest are Housing and Construction, Employment, Manufacturing and Industry, Monetary Statistics, and Economic Policy. These databases contain current reports in full-text. For older reports, check the State of the Nation Library. State of the Nation Library is divided into various topic areas, which can be browsed. The "search" function provides for searching on specific terms or subjects. Back to International Entrepreneuring
