LOCATING MARKET INFORMATION: Resources available in the library

 

Locate information on the market for your industry. Who are your consumers? What are the market demographics? What factors are influencing the market?

Market information consists of two major components: demographic information will detail the characteristics of the population in a specific area and consumer information will detail the demand for products or services in a given area.

The following resources are available in most libraries though the call numbers may vary slightly from the numbers given for the Regent University library:

All about women consumers.  New York: EPM Communications.  Covers trends in marketing to women.  REF HC110 C6 A44 2000.

American incomes: Demographics of who has money.  Ithaca, NY: New Strategist Publications, Inc.  Covers trends in household incomes, income statistics by age, race, type of household, etc.  REF HC110 I5 O43 1999.

Lakeville, CT: Grey House Publishing.  Covers business and living environments of 76 cities.  Gives background, changes in political, environment, and employment atmosphere, cost of living, finance, taxes, population, employment and earnings, commercial real estate, education, major employers, media, crime, climate, professional sports teams, and more.

Conroy, T. F., ed. Markets of the U.S. for business planners: Historical and current profiles of 183 U. S. urban economies by major section and industry, with maps, graphics, and commentary.  Detroit, MI: Omnigraphics.  Gives an overview of geographic markets.  REF HC106.8 M333 1996.

Consumer USA.  London: Euromonitor.  Divided into three sections.  Section 1 covers an overview of the US economy and market, which includes economic performance, demographic trends, household characteristics, consumer expenditures, eating habits, media and advertising, communication, and  travel and tourism.  Section 2 covers marketing parameters, which includes gross domestic product, international trade, personal consumption expenditures,  employment, demographics, household characteristics, education, price indicators, retail sales, advertising and media parameters, cultural indicators, consumer usership of durables and peripherals, personal finance, travel and tourism, consumer catering, housing, and transportation.  Section 3 covers consumer markets which includes food and beverages, tobacco, household cleaning products, OTC healthcare, paper products, cosmetics and toiletries, housewares, clothing and footware, electrical appliances, consumer electronics, and personal goods.  REF HC101 C744 2000.

Editor & publisher market guide.  New York: Editor & Publisher Co.  Provides statistics for population, income, number of households, major retail outlets, shopping centers, newspapers, etc.  REF HF5905 E38. Older editions are in General Collection.  

Household spending: Who spends how much on what.  Ithaca, NY: New Strategist Publications, Inc.  Covers spending trends, including spending by age, income, household type, race/ethnicity, education, household size, homeowners and renters, occupation.  Also includes statistics on spending on apparel, entertainment, financial products and services, food and alcoholic beverages, gifts, healthcare, household operations, shelter and utilities, personal care, reading, education, tobacco, and transportation.  REF HC110 C6 O34 1999.

Lazich, R. S.  Market share reporter.  Farmington Hills, MI: Gale Group.  Provides percentage of market share for products and services from a wide range of industries by SIC code.  REF HF5410 M35 2002.

Lifestyle market analyst.  Des Planes, IL: SRDS.  Covers market profiles which includes demographics for geographic markets, lifestyle profiles which includes profiles of lifestyle interests, consumer segment profiles, which covers profiles of consumer segments according to income, age, households, etc. and consumer magazines and direct marketing lists which covers the names of magazines and direct mail lists targeted to the lifestyle profiles.  REF HF5415.33. Mediamark research.  New York: Mediamark Research.  Multi-volume set includes market research with comprehensive demographic profiles of designated market areas and media coverage of lifestyle profiles.  Library has 1996 edition.  HF5415.3 M43.

Mitchell, S.  Generation X: The young adult market.  Ithaca, NY: New Strategist Publications, Inc.  Covers the 15-34 age market.  Includes trends and statistics on attitudes and behavior, education, health, income, labor force, living arrangements, population, spending, and wealth.  REF HC110 C6 M544 1999.

Mitchell, S.  The official guide to the generations: Who they are, how they live, what they think.  Ithaca, NY: New Strategist Publications, Inc.  Covers trends in the following areas: population, families and households, education, labor force, income & spending, housing, health, and attitudes and behavior.  REF HC110 C6 M545 1995.

The 1993 MSR minority market report: A portrait of the new America.  Coral Gables, FL: Market Segment Research, Inc.  Provides a demographic overview of minorities, which includes Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians.  REF HC5415.3 M75x 1993. 

Quick, A. C. & Baldwin, J. ed.  U.S. market trends & forecasts.  Detroit, MI: Gale Group.  Provides an overview and projections for over 400 industries.  Gives market share and key competitors for products. REF HF5415.1  U8 2001.

Regional markets.  Ithaca, NY: New Strategist Publications, Inc.  Two-volume set includes information at state and regional levels.  Volume 1 covers population statistics. Volume 2 covers household statistics by age, type, race/ethnicity, and income. REF HA214 E94 1999.

Research alert yearbook.  New York: EPM Communications, Inc.  Provides a profile of American consumers, their purchase habits and the economic/retail/ and societal changes that affect their choices.  REF HF5415.2 R47 1999x.

Slater, C.M. & Davis, M. G. State profiles: The population and economy of each U.S. state.  Lanham, MD: Bernan.  Provides a narrative and statistics for each state.  Includes population, unemployment rates, median income, population and labor force, personal income, economic structure, employment and earnings by sector, average wages and salaries, gross state product and manufacturing, and exports of goods.  REF HA203 S734 1999.

Simmons study of media and markets.  New York: Simmons Market Research Bureau.  Extensive coverage of market information and media that provide the best advertising choices for market segments.  Library has 1994 edition.  HF5415.3 S552x.  

The sourcebook of county demographics.  Fairfax, VA: CACI.  Demographics, marketing, and income data arranged by county.  REF HA203. S65 1999.

The sourcebook of zip code demographics.  Fairfax, VA: CACI.  Provides the following information for each zip code: total population, number of households, number of families, race, age distribution, median age, per capita income, household income, median household income, average disposable income by age, financial services, expenditures for home, entertainment, personal items.  Regent has 2000 edition.  REF HA203 S66 2000.
