LOCATING COMPANY INFORMATION

Before beginning your research, ask the following questions:

Is this a private company? A public company? A subsidiary? A nonprofit?

Public companies are those companies that trade on a major stock exchange.  Because these companies depend on investors, more information will be available.  Reports filed with the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) will be accessible through the EDGAR database.

Subsidiaries of publicly-traded companies may have limited information available.  It is important to research both the parent company and the subsidiary.

Finding information on private companies or nonprofit organizations will be more difficult since these companies are not required to disclose financial information.

What is the ticker symbol for the company?

Publicly-held companies will always have a ticker symbol, identifying them on the stock exchange.  To find the ticker symbol for a company, go to Yahoo! Finance - Ticker Symbol Lookup.
