Overview

LEXISNEXIS� Academic provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, and reference information.

Databases, providing indexing to over 7,000 publications; full-text of over 5,000 publications, includes:

Use pull-down menus to focus search

Multiple words entered as keywords are searched as phrases. Example: Toyota Camry searches for documents that contain the phrase "Toyota Camry"

Use Boolean operators – AND, OR, and AND NOT

Use connectors – w/p searches for words within same paragraph. Ex. Gates w/p Microsoft finds documents with terms Gates and Microsoft within the same paragraph

w/s searches for words within same sentence. Ex. Gates w/s Microsoft finds documents with terms Gates and Microsoft within the same sentence

w/n where n is a number of words between key terms. Ex. Gates w/5 Microsoft finds documents with term Gates within five words of Microsoft

Use asterisk * to replace characters within a word. Ex. Wom*n will find women or woman

Use exclamation point ! to replace characters at the end of a word. Ex. Child! will find child, children, childhood, childless, etc.

Can be keywords or phrases

For example, if I want to search General News by keyword language and author Safire, I would do this search: keyword language

To search a specific publication, use the Sources link in the Additional Search Options.  Check the source that you wish to search.

Date

To search by date, use the pull-down menu in the Additional Search Options.

When looking at results,

Document List displays basic information.

Expanded List displays a numbered list with each search word in context surrounded by approximately five words.

Full View gives the full-text.

Kwic View shows each of the search terms surrounded by approximately twenty words of text.

FOCUS

Use the FOCUS feature, to spotlight words within the document.  Click on FOCUS, enter words or phrases you want to apply to your search results. Click on the FOCUS button.  FOCUS words or phrases will appear in bold in your search results.

Articles can be downloaded, emailed or printed.

Search the following databases:

Business News
Want to find news about a company or other business topic? With a Business News search, you can find out the latest information about a specific company such as Microsoft, Time Warner, or General Motors.

Company Financial 
Get the "need to know" information about a company. Find out where a company is located, the names of its executives, financial information, and much more!

Compare Companies
This database searches Hoover's Company Reports. By selecting a specific field (sales, net income, employees, and/or location) and entering your search criteria, you can retrieve information on the companies that meet your criteria.  Results list description, key executives, number of employees, sales, a financial report, products, key competitors, and the URL.

SEC Filings
Retrieves EDGAR reports, including 10-K, quarterly, and proxy statements.

Industry  & Market
Learn about industry forecasts, trends, and the forces driving an industry.

Accounting Literature
Search accounting literature and journals.

Business Reference
Search for information on SIC Directory, World Business Opportunities, National Trade Data Bank Market Reports, Official Guide to the American Marketplace, Commerce Business Daily, trade shows, professional organizations, conferences, symposia, computer equipment and software, and marketing analysis.

To narrow search, use FOCUS Search

Enter the term: anti-trust

Search is narrowed to approximately 60 documents.

Return to Business

Company Financial
Search by Company Name, using Sears

Source: Standard and Poor’s Corporate Descriptions

Date: Previous two years

Choose the 2^nd search result. Sears, Roebuck, And Co.

Change menu to SIC and enter search term 7221

Source: Disclosure

Date: Previous two years

Results will list certain companies with the primary SIC of 7221 (photography studios)

Return to Business

Compare Companies
Use the pull-down menu to select Net Income "Less than $100 million"

Location: Virginia

The results will include brief company capsules of companies in Virginia or having Virginia in their address with net income of less than $100 million.

Industry & Market
For Industry Type: choose Apparel and Textile News

Keyword: tencel

Date: Previous two years

Accounting Literature
Enter the keyword: profit ratios

Choose Source: Miller GAAP guide

Search should retrieve chapters relating to profit ratios.

Business Reference
Use keywords: Argentina and computer software

Results from Commerce Business Daily and Market Reports

To print or save from LexisNexis Academic 
Click on the title of the document.  Click on the Print/Save Options Icon at the upper left hand of the screen. Click on Display Document. This will re-format the document by removing the menu bars. Use the print function on your browser to print the document or save to your hard drive or disk. To get back, click on Return to Full.

To email the document from LexisNexis Academic 
Click on the email icon and enter the recipient's address. Click on EMAIL icon.
