Celebrating National Library Week
by Dorothy Hargett, Circulation Supervisor,
& Sandy Yaegle, Education Librarian

We hope you were able to join Regent University Library staff as we celebrated National Library Week. This event sponsored by the American Library Association is celebrated in libraries everywhere to promote library resources and services, and also to honor staff and users. If you would like to know more about the history of National Library week, you may visit the American Library Association (http://www.ala.org). One of the Association's main activities this year was its honoring of Mrs. Laura Bush for her service to libraries. Besides fun and fellowship, here are some of the highlights of Regent's celebration:

  • Snacks were provided each day between the hours of 10:00am - 3:00pm. Each day presented an assortment of goodies that were 'yummy to the tummy".
  • Amnesty! Amnesty! Amnesty! All fines were forgiven for any overdue books brought in, regardless of how long they had been out. Regent University Library was happy to take this opportunity to honor all library users by waiving fines for the week. Many students poured in with books and huge smiles as we erased all fines when the materials were returned.
  • An "Open House" reception was held on Thursday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Approximately 40 people stopped by the library for some refreshments and to place their name in a drawing for a chance to win a desktop globe.   The drawing for the globe was held at the conclusion of the reception and the globe was won by Justin Eastwood, Assistant to the Dean in the Robertson School of Government. A CD highlighting the resources and services of the library was distributed to those who attended.
If you didn't make it this year, don't be dismayed-- We'll be back next year!!!

50,000 Books Acquired
by Leanne Strum, Coordinator of Systems and Technical Services

Regent University Library has been blessed with the undergraduate library of the William Tyndale College, in Farmington Hills, Michigan, which consists of approximately 50,000 titles. The William Tyndale College library was started in 1945 and closed on December 31, 2004. During the fifty years that this library existed its mission was to support the undergraduate program of the school. This valuable collection, covering the humanities and social sciences, will strengthen the library collection and support the Regent University School of Undergraduate Studies program through the addition of approximately 30,000 unique titles.

How do you pack and move 50,000 books from Michigan to Virginia? Two moving companies specializing in moving libraries were contacted. Mulder's Red Carpet Movers was selected to pack and move the boxes of books to Virginia Beach. On March 22, representatives from the University Library and the School of Undergraduate Studies traveled to Farmington Hills to oversee the move.

Books were removed from the shelves and packed into over 3,000 boxes, one row at a time. The boxes were then loaded on semi trailers and delivered to Regent University. On March 28, the library received the first semi trailer filled with boxes. Having only a four-hour time frame to unload the truck, Regent University Facility Services worked feverously, in a downpour, and unloaded 1,119 boxes in only two hours. The next two semi trailers arrived on March 30th and April 4th and our facility services department again unloaded the trucks in record time. What a team!

The 3,000 plus boxes, now stored in the library building, are in the process of being unpacked, sorted, processed, and added to the Regent University Library. Many of the titles are rare first-edition books that are out-of-print. The next time you check out a book at the library, check to see if the title is from the William Tyndale College Library.

Important Course Reserves Guidelines
by Rebecca Lucas, Assistant Circulation Supervisor

April is a busy and important time of year for course reserves as it heralds the end of the spring semester and the onset of the summer semester.

For faculty and their assistants, there is one key point to remember when submitting course reserves, whether for traditional or electronic use: all reserve requests must be accompanied by a completed and signed reserves form.

Traditional Reserves

  • Faculty-member or G.A./T.A. should collect and bring all reserve items plus signed reserves form to the circulation desk.
  • Faculty may submit personal copies of items for placement on reserve.

For complete traditional reserves information, please visit: http://www.regent.edu/general/library/services/course_e-reserve/home.cfm

Electronic Reserves

Where Can I Find?: Moved Periodicals
by Dorothy Hargett, Circulation Supervisor

A recent location change has been made with a selection of periodicals that have been moved to the fourth floor of the University Library. The change was necessary in order to make room for incoming materials from William Tyndale College. The circulation staff worked hard to move the periodicals to the fourth floor in a systematic and efficient manner. The periodicals moved were selected in accordance with statistics that revealed lower usage than the ones chosen to remain in the general collection. However, patrons will be able to request the relocated periodicals without a problem. If you're looking for a periodical that has been moved, you will find a "dummy book" in its place, directing you to go to the Circulation Desk. Here are the procedures:

  • Circulation staff will give you a "Fourth Floor Material Request" form to complete.
  • Fill out the form.
  • Please confirm the information in the Library Catalog before submitting the form.
  • Request forms are picked up at Circulation Monday-Friday at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and Sundays at 4:00pm.
  • Please allow two(2) hours from our pick up time for delivery to Circulation.
  • Materials not picked up by patrons within 24 hours will be returned to the fourth floor.
The Regent University Library is growing and continues to be committed to your success at Regent University.

Did You Know...
by Ellen Cox, Administrative Assistant

...special needs are met in the library.

The library has accommodations for visually impaired students. On the first floor in the reference area we have a large screen PC designed for those who have difficulty seeing or motor skills problems. Accessibility options include time ranges for key strokes and font size for viewing.

On the second floor there is a special needs study room with an Aladdin Ambassador machine for the visually impaired. The reader will allow you to scan the text of a book placed on its screen. After approximately 30 seconds you hear the scanned text being spoken. The Aladdin has several choices of vocals setting so that the user can choose a voice that is pleasant to the ears. We also have set up a special study table for wheelchair bound students near the Reference Desk.

Anyone needing assistance in the Library can check in at the Circulation Desk. Our staff will be glad to help in any way possible to make materials available. If you need materials you can call ahead and the Circulation staff will retrieve them from the stacks and have them available at the Circulation Desk when you arrive.

Future plans for the library include automating the two front doors of the University Library so that wheelchair bound students will be able to access the library without having to wait for someone to open the door for them. This plus a new security exit will allow for freer access for all students.
