Acquisitions Round Up: The Best of 2004
by Harold Henkel,
Assistant Circulation Supervisor

In the first ten months of 2004, the University Library added 4,577 new monograph titles, 296 films and other audiovisual titles, and 29 new online databases. That works out to 106 new titles per week added to the collection. So what are some of the best of 2004? Regent's librarians have reviewed titles in their subject areas and come up with a list of notable acquisitions in 2004.

Steven Kenneally, liaison to the School of Leadership Studies finds three books especially noteworthy: Organizational Culture and Leadership, by Edgar Schein; Managing the Future: Foresight in the Knowledge Economy, a collection of ten papers on strategic foresight; and Managing Learning and Communication Systems as Business Assets, by Diane Gayeski.

Fotini Kontos, liaison to the School of Psychology & Counseling, notes the addition of two important databases: Psychology: A SAGE Full-Text Collection, offering full text of over 21,600 articles, and Family Index Database, which has citations from over 2,200 international journals. Among many important new books are Handbook of Developmental Psychology, edited by Jaan Valsiner and Kevin Connolly; Clinical Handbook of Pastoral Counseling, edited by Robert Wicks, Richard Parsons, and Donald Capps; and Handbook of Parenting: Theory and Research for Practice, edited by Masud Hoghughi and Nicholas Long.

Of the many resources on government purchased this year, librarian Marta Lee singles out as especially timely the Encyclopedia of Presidential Campaigns, Slogans, Issues, and Platforms, by Robert Roberts and Homeland Security Statutes, a collection of federal security legislation enacted since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Another useful new resource is Government Online: A One-Click Access to 3,400 Federal and State Websites.

Divinity librarian Robert Sivigny includes two software programs in his "best of 2004" selections: BibleWorks 6.0 and LOGOS Series X Library System. Among other important divinity resources acquired since January are The Encyclopedia of Judaism, Biographical Dictionary of Evangelicals, and Mission Handbook. U.S. and Canadian Protestant Ministries Overseas. The library also now has Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ on DVD.

Librarian Leanne Strumm writes that two electronic databases are possibly the most significant business acquisitions this year. Mergent Online offers "a wealth of detail on items including business description, history, property, subsidiaries, officers and directors, long-term debt and capital stock. Financial statements are presented in 'as-reported' form and in native currencies, maintaining the full integrity of this critical information." LexisNexis Company Dossier reports on 10 million U.S. and 3 million non-U.S. companies.

Education Librarian Sandra Yaegle lists reference resources as the library's most important acquisitions in this field. The Requirements for Certification of Teachers, Counselors, Librarians, Administrators for Elementary and Secondary Schools is a good resource for job hunters, with the requirements needed to be fulfilled in order to be certified in each state. The Educator's Desk Reference (EDR): a Sourcebook of Educational Information and Research is a ready-reference handbook that directs researchers to education resources (both traditional and electronic) that are pertinent to their subject area. The Encyclopedia of education (8 volumes) is the updated version to the classic 1971 edition.   A comprehensive education encyclopedia, it contains entries on a wide variety of topics.

To view the most recent acquisitions to the library collection each week, see our featured lists page.

Donations Welcomed
by Kathy Watson, Cataloging Assistant

We are always happy to receive donated books for consideration as additions to our library collection! We receive single used books, entire collections containing many volumes, and new literary works from various publishers and authors.

Usually a donation is delivered to the Circulation Desk or via mail. Upon donation , a gift form is filled out giving the donor's name, address, number of pieces given, and an estimation of the value of the gift. It is important for the donor to know that they are responsible for the "estimation of value" and any gifts that are valued more than $5,000.00 need to have a professional appraisal.

After the paperwork is initiated, the count is continued and broken down into "Print" and "Audio-Visual" categories. Two copies are then made of the form, the original and one copy go to Administration, and the remaining copy is filed in Technical Services. Administration then generates a "thank-you" acknowledgement to the contributor which will also be their official receipt for income tax purposes.

The items given are then sorted according to subject and put on "decision shelves" awaiting approval by the various librarians. Once a book is approved it is cataloged and added to the collection. If the donation is not to be added it is then put up for sale in the area across from the circulation desk in the library.

Many times we receive some very special donations. In one instance, the library received an old Bible with a dried and pressed corsage in the center along with recordings of family births, marriages, and deaths. Every so often we have discovered old photographs and literature of long ago. It just makes one wonder and imagine the lives of these people.

Where Can I Find?: Pentecostal Research Collection
by Robert Sivigny, Divinity Librarian

If you have been in the library lately you have probably noticed the three nice display cabinets located against the wall near the Circulation Desk. These cabinets hold Regent University Library's growing Pentecostal Research Collection. This collection had its beginning in 1997 with the purchase of a private collection from Rev. Talmadge McNabb, a retired Assemblies of God military chaplain. The collection comprises a rich selection of books, directories, pamphlets, and periodicals all related to Pentecostal and charismatic history in the 20th century.

Holdings include William Branham's sermons on audiocassette from 1955 to 1965, works and recordings by Kathryn Kuhlman, the complete works of T. L. and Daisy Osborne, the works of evangelist A. A. Allen, and Confidence magazine, a British Pentecostal magazine published in the early 20th century.

An alphabetical title listing of everything in the collection can be seen by typing in the words "Pentecostal Research Collection" as a title search in the Regent Library catalog. There are currently 1,037 items in the collection. After your search results display, click on the "Limit/Sort Search" button at the top of the catalog screen to narrow your search, if you wish, to a particular author, subject, publisher, or date range within the collection.

Items in the collection can be used only within the library. Ask at the Circulation Desk and an attendant will open a display case and assist you. Up to three items may be used at a time for a three hour time period. Audiovisual equipment and photocopy machines are available if needed. Some of the items in the Pentecostal Research Collection have duplicate copies in the general collection and may be checked out. Search the library catalog to see if Regent Library has multiple copies of the item for which you are looking.

For more information about the Pentecostal Research Collection inquire at the Regent University Library Reference Desk.

Factoid

Since the library began its Information Research and Resources Course in 2001, almost 2,700 students have completed the course. On average, there are approximately 380 students enrolled in the course per semester.
