Season's Greetings
from the Library Faculty & Staff!
We wish you safe and happy holidays.

Library Offers Extended Hours (& free coffee!) for Exams
by Leslie Christianson, Assistant Circulation Supervisor

Beginning Monday, December 1st until Thursday, December 11th the University Library will extend its hours to 2:00am. Friday, December 5th the library will close at its normal time of 6:00pm.

During final exams last spring, the Library offered extended hours for the first time and students were grateful for the extra moments to use the Reference Collection, Electronic Resource Center, Computer Lab, and Reserves. Chairs were filled and piles of books spilled out on tables throughout the library. Around 10:00pm each evening, the students took a moment to stretch their legs and grab cups of freshly brewed coffee served by the library entrance. We hope students will utilize this opportunity again this year and we look forward to serving them!

Bookin' It With the Rolling Tomes!
Library Faculty Participate in Virginia Beach Holiday Parade

by Karen Robinson, Library Liaison to the School of Communication & the Arts

Librarians Fotini Kontos (Psychology & Counseling) and Karen Robinson (Communication & the Arts) marched along Atlantic Avenue with "The Rolling Tomes" in the Virginia Beach Hometown Holiday Parade on Saturday, November 15. The Rolling Tomes are librarians and friends who perform routines with book carts and oversize books in parades along the East Coast and even in London, England. They are always a crowd favorite and spectators frequently wave their library cards, shouting, "Here come the librarians!"

Kontos, Robinson, and Education Librarian Sandy Yaegle have performed with the group in previous parades and enjoy the opportunity to associate with other librarians in the Tidewater area.

Christmas Stories You Haven't Heard Before
by Leslie Christianson, Assistant Circulation Supervisor

Building a snowman may not be a possibility on a sunny December day in Virginia Beach. However, in the main street town invented by author Jan Karon, it becomes a special event that brings out all the familiar characters from her "Mitford Years" series.
The Mitford Snowmen: A Christmas Story is one of the many books in the University Library’s Popular Reading Collection that can shake the Scrooge out of any of us. If you are looking for a book to read that will conjure up images of partridges and pear trees, take a few moments to see what the University Library has to offer.

Finding true love at Christmastime is the theme of A Victorian Christmas Tea. This collection of four holiday inspired novellas also features a festive recipe from each of the authors.

Hope and faith are the presents inside Gideon’s Gift: a Novel by Karen Kingsbury. Gideon, an ill child in need of a Christmas miracle, asks God to touch the life of a homeless man. Her unexpected compassion forever changes both of them.

Other books in the collection include Christmas Vows: $5.00 Extra by Lori Copeland and Skipping Christmas by John Grisham (also available as an audiobook). Take advantage of the semester break and get into the holiday spirit. Check out the display of Christmas themed materials in the Popular Reading Collection (located behind the Reference Desk on the first floor of the University Library).

From left to right: Dorothy, Leslie & HaroldWhat DO They Do?: Circulation
by Dorothy Hargett, Circulation Supervisor

Dorothy Hargett, Leslie Christianson, Harold Henkel and 11 Graduate Assistants (GAs) work hard to help make operations in the circulation department flow smoothly. You can always find us checking out books, shelving items, and helping patrons find materials.

Dorothy, the Circulation Supervisor, works diligently to handle all administrative duties and makes sure all areas of the department function efficiently. Leslie and Harold share the responsibilities of Assistant Circulation Supervisor. Leslie’s main focus is GA supervision (schedules, time cards, staff meetings) and she also works hard to ensure the accuracy of patron records. Leslie willingly provides support to the Circulation Supervisor in various other duties as assigned. Although Harold has only been with the circulation department for two months he has already proven to be a great asset. He works hard processing "Print and Electronic Reserves” and has already developed a positive working relationship with students and professors. Harold oversees the search for missing books and is always willing to assist where needed.

We are excited about the recent technology-based services that are now offered to Regent University library patrons: online renewal of materials and Wireless Internet connectivity. Other innovations include Sunday hours, extended hours during exams, and the creation of three group and three individual study rooms that may be reserved on a daily basis.
Natasha & Anthony
Customer service is our primary focus. We are always thinking of newer and better ways to serve our patrons, such as an amnesty period on overdue books during National Library Week. Our skilled staff is keen on library policy and procedure, but they are also trained to listen and respond to patron needs with care and concern. Because our department has a diverse cultural makeup, with at least 10 different nationalities represented, you will always find your interaction with us to be unique and interesting. Our staff works faithfully and will serve you with a warm attitude, genuine smile, and a commitment to make your visit to the Regent University Library an enjoyable experience.

New Library Pages: Coming in January!
by Amber Wood, Systems Department

Our Web is getting a makeover! The Library Systems Department is in the process of creating pages and implementing many new helpful features.

The new Library Calendar will contain special hours, events, and learning opportunities.

Each Online Database and Index will have a "More Info" page describing the resource, subject and date coverage, and how frequently the information is updated. When available, a list of titles and a guide to using the resource will be included. On each page, there will also be a place to contact Library staff with database problems.

Our other research tools will also be more accessible. "Research Tools" will supply sources for electronic books and journals, databases by subject topic or information type, and a link to our Virtual Reference Desk.

Library maps have been updated to help you find materials, laptop ports, and study rooms more efficiently.

The "Show Me How To" and FAQ/Help sections contain tutorials on finding resources, renewing books, and using our services. Guides to searching the Library catalog, and using PirateSource and MyLibrary are already available. Additional helps will be placed online as they are created.

As always, University Library policies and contact information will remain at your fingertips.

Look for the new Library Web on January 5th!
