2003 Regent University Library Open House
by Karen Robinson, Library Liaison to the School of Communication & the Arts

The Regent University Library Faculty and Staff

Your Passport to a World of Information – the Regent University Library's open house on September 25th, was a great success with over 200 attendees enjoying the international atmosphere. Signing in at the Customs Desk (for dozens of door prizes) and picking up a "passport to information" was the first stop on each guest's journey through the Library. Fourteen country pavilions were set up to teach about the Library's online resources and services. After visiting at least 5 pavilions and getting one's passport stamped, a guest could enter Liu’s International Café in the center of the library.

A highlight of the day was the unveiling of the new library information Kiosk, which will provide library users with easy access to library maps, virtual tours, and other information that will make their visit to the library more enjoyable (click any of the photos for larger images).

Wireless Connectivity
by Leanne Strum, Library Liaison to the School of Business

Thanks to the addition of wireless technology in the University Library, local students can check out a wireless network card, plug it into their laptop, and stroll the stacks. Access points have been established in both the University Library and Law Library to serve as communications "hubs."

The Regent University Library is pleased to make wireless networking cards available for use in personal laptops of Regent students, faculty, and staff with active Regent IDs. The wireless networking cards are used to connect to the campus network and the Internet via the University’s mobile access service. Cards may be used in laptops with the following operating systems: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP ; Linux; or MacOS 8.0 or later. The user's laptop must also have a CD-ROM drive in order to install the wireless card software.

The Regent University wireless network, made possible by the Information Technology Department, uses a shared network technology. Like all shared networks, you should presume that this network is insecure. Others using the wireless network could capture passwords and account numbers. For policies concerning checkout and use, as well as other information regarding wireless cards, please go to: http://www.regent.edu/general/library/services/wireless/

What DO They Do?: Interlibrary Loan
by Patty Hughson, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Supervisor

Patty Hughson and Susie Freeman make up the Regent University Interlibrary Loan Department. They work tirelessly to serve both the Regent Community and the students of many other institutions by obtaining books and journal articles. Patty came to work at Regent in March of 1982 and has been working in Interlibrary Loan since 1992. Susie joined the University Library in February of 1994 and has been Patty’s assistant since 1999.

Interlibrary Loan streamlines the thousands of requests it receives, 11,921 in 2002 alone, through a system known as ILLiad. Patrons may register on the ILLiad Home Page (http://illiad.regent.edu/illiad/logon.html) by clicking "First Time User." Once registered, they may complete and submit book and article requests forms electronically.

Interlibrary Loan is divided into two sections: Borrowing and Lending. Patty works in the Borrowing section of ILL and requests books and articles not available through Regent's print or database resources. Susie is in charge of the Lending section. She downloads requests from other institutions, fills book requests and ships them. She also copies journal articles which will be scanned and sent via the Internet whenever possible.

Interlibrary Loan also offers service to non-local Regent students by shipping circulating items and copying articles available in our library, as well as borrowing articles from other Institutions.
