As Dean of the Regent University Library, and on behalf of all Library personnel, I would like to introduce you to the inaugural issue of the University Library's online newsletter. Regent University Library:
Your Passport to a World of Information

by Karen Robinson, Library Liaison to the School of Communication & the Arts

Take a trip around the World of Information on Thursday, September 25, between 10:00am-3:00pm in the University Library.

The world of information can be daunting. There is so much "out there" and you wonder, "How do I find the information I need?" The faculty and staff of Regent University Library are here to serve and to teach you how to locate the information needed to fulfill your research quest. You will save hours of research time by stopping by to learn how to access Regent University Library resources and services.

On Thursday, September 25, between 10:00am and 3:00pm, stop at the "Customs" desk just inside the library to pick up "Your Passport to a World of Information." Visit 5 country "pavilions" to watch short demonstrations of library services or resources and receive stamps in your passport for a trip to our International Café for snacks, coffee, and delicious international fare. Door prizes will be given out every 10 minutes.  With subscriptions to over 120 online indexes and databases, a library catalog that can do almost everything but card tricks, and new electronic services to help you sort through and organize the information you acquire, you can't allow yourself to miss this fun, informative and helpful event!

New Library Services
by Leanne Strum, Library Liaison to the School of Business

The University Library has two new online services designed specifically to help you organize your research: MyLibrary and Pirate Source.

MyLibrary is part of the University Library's strategy to provide better digital library services to its customers.  MyLibrary software was developed at North Carolina State University to facilitate access to relevant information by providing selected resources in specific subject areas. Reducing information overload is seen as one of the most important goals of providing personalized library interfaces.

MyLibrary is a collection of electronic resources that can be customized to reflect your own personal interests and research needs. Portable and constantly up-to-date, MyLibrary is also proactive in that it allows librarians to send you messages or information (about new databases or e-journals) on a regular basis. With MyLibrary, you have direct access to the librarian for your discipline. Do not waste another minute accessing a myriad of Web pages.  Sign up to use the MyLibrary portal and create your own "personal research portal."

The second of our newest services, Pirate Source, is a dynamic database put together by librarians familiar with each subject, that also allows students to find starting points for their research.  Developed by systems librarians at Joyner Library, East Carolina University, the software code for Pirate Source has been graciously shared with other academic libraries. We have configured the database to meet the needs of the students, staff and faculty at Regent.

Pirate Source is your starting point for the best print and online resources. This database combines reference materials, databases and websites, and lets you pick the type of information you need in the format of your choice. New resources are being added weekly. Go to Pirate Source and follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose a Subject from the list.
  2. Select All or any number of Source Types. If "Starting Points" is listed, be sure to select it, as it contains multiple source types.
  3. If desired, choose a Retrieval Preference (web-based or in the University Library)
  4. Click the View Sources button.

New Librarian at Regent University

My name is Steven Kenneally.  I am the new Reference/Digital
Services Librarian and the Liaison to the School of Leadership
Studies.  I finished my Master of Library and Information Science degree at Kent State University in May.  I received my undergraduate degree in Religion from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio.  I was born and raised outside of the Youngstown, Ohio area.

I like playing guitar and spending quality time with my wonderful wife, Jamie, with whom I recently celebrated our 8-year anniversary. I have a dog named Poopy (not a misprint!) and my favorite movie is "It's A Wonderful Life."

I am very grateful to begin my career as a Reference Librarian here at Regent.

God bless!

Steven Kenneally
