Fastweb: 10 Tips for Career Planning

1. Take a variety of classes.
Identify a career path and make sure to take the necessary courses to achieve your goal.

2. Complete self-assessment tests. Career self-assessment tests will match your skills and interests with careers that may fit you. A good career assessment test can be found at: http://web.tickle.com/jasper.

3. Develop a career inventory.
Do you want to start out with a large or small company? What kind of work environment do you prefer? Do you love to travel or stay put? Think about these questions to discover what it is you want from your career.

4. Explore career options.
Talk to people in career fields of interest to you. Also, visit sites such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics at: www.bls.gov/emp/ to research different careers, popular industries, and more. Your school’s library also offers resources on various careers.

5. Utilize campus resources.
Visit your school’s career center as early as possible to begin researching careers and to speak with a career counselor for guidance and other resources.

6. Participate in extra-curricular activities.
Getting involved on campus and in your community will help you sort out your interests and discover your skills.

7. Join an association or club.
Membership in a professional assocation or group related to your career interests will help you meet people and secure future contacts for references or letters of recommendation.

8. Network.
Keep a record of everyone you know such as neighbors, relatives, family friends, etc., and talk to them about possible career choices. Building a good relationship with these people and expanding your network could help you build your references or help you land a full-time position upon graduation.

9. Find a mentor.
Seek guidance from an instructor or professor on campus, preferably one whose courses you have enjoyed. Also, contact your school’s alumni association. They can refer you to someone in your field of interest.

10. Interview.
Plan to go on several interviews. Start going on mock interviews at your school’s career center. Interview as much as possible with companies that you may or may not be sure
about. Your interviewing skills will improve more and more each time.
