QEP UPDATE
with Dr. Carlos Campo

--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Here’s the latest on Regent’s “Quality Enhancement Plan” or QEP. Let’s begin with a reminder of our goals:

The objectives of the QEP are 1) To increase global learning in academic programs 2) Enhance faculty expertise in global teaching and learning and 3) To become a leading center of Christian thought and action.

The School of Global Leadership and Entrepreneurship and the School of Undergraduate Studies are both implementing curricular changes, with GLE developing a widely used rubric to determine how global elements are impacting students’ work in classes.
We are also moving forward with ways to enhance out faculty’s global competence.

The next global roundtable will help us meet this objective. In addition, we are asking faculty who travel internationally to look for formal ways to share the experience and describe how the travel helped them understand their world differently—so that we can build our global competencies through collective experiences.

Finally, we are working on instruments to measure competency, catalog our QEP work, and foster research, all with an eye on becoming a leading resource in Christian higher education for Christ-centered global competency.

We will continue to ask the question: “Are you global?” and try to answer the question together and become a more global community.

So….”are you Global?”

Did you know...
that in Blackboard 8.0, Grade Center looks quite a bit different from the previous Gradebook? Here are 3 tips to help you quickly adjust your Blackboard Grade Center.

1. You probably noticed that the Grade Center has many additional columns that appear there by default. You can remove the columns that you don't want to see, such as for example student ID or Last Access, by clicking on the arrow and checking out "Hide Column". This will shorten and clear your view.

2. You can also quickly rearrange and reorder your columns. For example, if you want Total and Weighted Total columns to be the last column of your Grade Center table, you need to click on Manage option on the top menu, then choose Organize Grade Center. Scroll down to the section called “Shown in Selected Views Only.” Place your cursor over the greyed area on the far left of the row you wish to move. Hold down your left mouse key while you drag it to the bottom row.

3. Setting grade weights is very important for your courses to ensure that Blackboard accurately calculates the final totals. To set up weights in the new Grade Center you need to:

Access the Grade Center through the Control Panel.

In the column called "Weighted Total" click on the arrow and select "Modify Column"

Highlight the columns that you need to set up weights in and click on the arrow to the right of the box

A window opened with the boxes to enter your weights per item

Ensure that your total weights equal 100%

4. You can select whether you want your students to see the class averages or not .

Click "Submit" to finalize the changes.

Feel free to experiment with the new Grade Center and let the Help Desk know if you have any questions.
Now you know!

Cabanda: Good Morning. My name is Emilyn Cabanda. I am a newly-hired faculty of GLE for the MBA programs. Prior to coming to Regent, I taught in the Philippines and served two visiting positions in Japan. I can say that I am a product of global education because I earned my degrees on three continents.

My first degree was in Asia in my home country, the Philippines. My second degree was in Texas, USA. And my third degree was in Australia. So, I do believe that my intercultural competence was developed and honed during my Fulbright years, when I was a Fulbright scholar studying for my master’s degree program at Baylor University. As a Fulbrighter, I serve as an ambassador of goodwill for my home country, and I was – and I became actively involved in local community organizations in Texas.

Through speaking engagement activities, I shared with American people my culture, my home country, and the importance of international education and travel.

To quote William – former Senator William Fulbright, "The essence of intercultural education is empathy. Empathy to see the world as others see it or...allowing possibility that others may see something that we have failed to see, or may see it more accurately."

So, this guiding principle has molded me for my passion for global education and for the study abroad opportunities for my students. So, for almost six year of academic experiences, I provided study abroad opportunities for my students. And also, I plan to continue this kind of enriching educational opportunities for my students here at Regent University.

I have a strong belief that God has called me into this place to take up the highest calling to be His instrument to equip Christian leaders to change the world.
