"RU Ready?" with Dr. Bill Ventura

--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

With a growing body of faculty, including adjunct professors at a distance, Academic Affairs and the Deans of Regent University collaborated with CTL and Human Resources to develop an online mini-course for new and returning faculty. "RU Ready? Learning About Regent", located in Blackboard, covers the mission, purpose, and policies of Regent University. If you are a new professor, you will become acquainted with the vision of the university. If you have been here for quite some time, you may not be familiar with new policies and procedures so you can benefit as well. This mini-course includes quizzes which are short and self-grading.

Deans have requested that the assessment be completed by the end of December 2009. Started August 21st, RU Ready? appears in Blackboard under "Courses in which you are Enrolled". While December's the drop-dead date for completion, taking it sooner may facilitate a smooth start this semester.  So let's get ready.

Did you know...

that there is a great new faculty resource called "Faculty Essentials?" This new website provides information on new University policies, procedures and practices. From organizing course materials in Blackboard to planning for faculty development and tenure, this online resource is rich in information and relevant to new and current faculty here at Regent University. Let's take a look at some of the website's features:

New faculty will be particularly interested in the "Getting Started" section of the website. This section provides information on obtaining parking passes, ID cards and email accounts, accessing the MyRegent Portal and the Academic Calendar, and a list of University Communications to help you stay in the loop.

The Instructional Support section is valuable for all faculty, offering information on syllabus guidelines, course evaluations, and faculty development training.

The Faculty Support section covers topics such as faculty governance, tenure, library access, computer support, using the content system and locating indispensable forms.

The Policies and Resources sections of the website also contain important information for every faculty member.

To access this beneficial resource, go to www.regent.edu/FacultyEssentials or locate the Faculty Essentials link on the Academic Affairs homepage. Or just click on the link located in the Useful Links section on this web page.

I would like to add something since this is very dear to me. Sometimes global competence, or whatever global we have, is associated with relativism. It’s associated with our understanding that everything goes. Well, this is not what we are all about, and I invite you read the 75 page QEP document. Honestly. I read it with a Christian mind and I went there to interact with the text and find the gap. I could not. It is about – being globally competent means that you have to be effective. Are we not supposed to be leaders to change the world? Should we not, therefore, have a plan on how to do that effectively? And that, indeed involves research, teaching, questioning. We don’t have the truth, but the universal exists. We have to be culturally relevant – not relative.

When I go out, I want to be able to share God’s love in a good way so that I am understood. It’s back to modulation, but I don’t want to put on my engineering hat now. You modulate your message so that it is well-received on the receiving end. You love your audience, therefore, you modulate that message and we know that message is so clear. But yes it has to be effective, but why not be effective?
