Social Networks such as FaceBook, LinkedIn and many others, have become extremely popular in the last two years. They offer highly interactive communication and relational networking tools, supported by audio and visual components.

With virtual reality and physical reality merging more and more due to the rapid advancement of digital technology, many young people move back and forth between these two worlds seamlessly.

Social networking holds incredible potential for the world of academia. One way to explore the potential of social networking in your courses is to create a social network specifically for your course using platforms such as Ning.com. Ning offers free webspace where you can create a learning community for your courses. With Ning, you and your students can create wikis and blogs, post video and pictures, hold discussions, and manage events. Social networks using Ning can be created so that they are open to anyone, or can be set so that only certain people can join.

Additionally, Ning allows you to create your own design, an element which helps you and your students feel more like owners of the site.

Consider exploring social networks as a community-building element for your courses. If you would like some help navigating social networking, contact Chris Nickel at the Center for Teaching and Learning. Now you know!

R U Global?

The first RU Global Roundtable was hosted by the School of Global Leadership and Entrepreneurship and the Center for Teaching and Learning on February 26th. Were you able to attend? If not, you can watch the event online. Just go to www.regent.edu/ctl and scroll to the link at the bottom of the page.

When you click on the link, you’ll be asked to take a brief survey on global competence. Once you’ve finished watching the video you’ll be asked to take another brief survey. Your responses to these surveys will help us assess the effectiveness of the roundtable and how we can improve subsequent RU Global events.

While you’re in a global state of mind, why not join the RU Global wiki and social network? At ruglobal.ning.com, members can discuss issues of Christ-centered global competence, write their own blogs, and post photos and videos. Why not join and become a leader in developing Christ-centered global competence at Regent?

Finally, for more information about RU Global and the Quality Enhancement Plan, go to www.regent.edu/ruglobal .
