Images are used to augment, to complement, and to emphasize the teaching points and learning objectives in your course. They are also used to create a welcoming and visually stimulating online classroom for your students.

Did you know that there is a method you can use to help choose effective images for your online classes? There are five criteria to consider :

Purpose: What are the images in your online class there to do?
Audience: Who will the students in your class be? Keep them and their tastes in mind when choosing images.

Objectives: After viewing your images, what will your students be able to do?

Size: How many images will you include and in what areas of the course?

Content: Determine what type of images you will include in your course. Write down everything that comes to mind, then fine tune which ideas you will keep and implement later.

To learn more about this topic, take CTL's Impacting Online Learning with Visual Elements, one of the six courses in the Online Instructional Design Certificate Program. Visit the Regent Training System link to register.

Mark your calendars now for January, 2008! During the Christmas and New Years’ holidays, the Regent University Blackboard system will get an upgrade to Blackboard 7, and it will be completed in time for the start of the Spring 2008 semester. As you probably already know, Blackboard is an Internet-based communication platform which serves as an important component of Regent's higher education online delivery system. Here now is Chelsea Kelley to tell us more about seven new highlights found in Blackboard 7!

7 highlights about Blackboard 7:

1) Early warning system is now available to make sure no student falls behind in their work.

2) You can now grade students' discussion board postings directly in the discussion board as you're reading their postings.

3) You can now subscribe to discussion threads and receive email notifications when there are new posts.

4) Discussion board forums can now be moderated by you or anyone you designate.

5) You can automatically email students when you post a new announcement.

6) There are new awesome design options for e-portfolios.

7) And finally, you can easily recover deleted items in the content system with the new Recycle Bin feature.

Ginger ZillgesThe ADDIE Model with Ginger Zillges

When developing a course, try using the ADDIE Model. ADDIE is an acronym for the five major steps of developing a course:

1. Analyze
2. Design
3. Develop
4. Implement
5. Evaluate

During Analysis, think about who your students will be and what they'll need to learn - and what obstacles you may encounter.

The Design stage involves formulating objectives that are measurable and creating assessments.

The Development stage is the most detailed, but also allows for the most creativity. In this stage, you'll select your texts, construct your syllabus, and create multimedia.

The Implementation stage of the ADDIE model is where the course is actually executed; when you put your hard work in the beginning stages of development to the test by using it with the students.

The last step of the ADDIE model is to Evaluate your course by examining student feedback and overall success. And remember, it's reiterative and keeps on going and going.

There you have it! Learn more.
