What About Wimba?
by Chris Nickel

Have you used Wimba Live Classroom recently? If not, you may be missing out on an opportunity to utilize educational technology that will enhance learning in your courses.

Wimba Classroom is a live, virtual classroom environment that allows instructors and students to "meet" virtually, no matter where they are located. Wimba Live Classroom includes the following features:

Many Regent faculty are taking advantage of the unique features offered by Wimba to teach courses that are student-centered and highly engaging. Here are just a few examples:

Wimba Live Classroom Session
  • In the School of Divinity, Dr. Diane Chandler uses Wimba Live Classroom to present course material and for class discussion.
To accommodate students' schedules, Dr. Chandler offers a choice of two dates and times for each Wimba session. She wrote, "What I love about Wimba is the opportunity to frame discussion groups" with the Break-Out rooms feature.

  • Also from the Divinity School, Dr. Lyle Story uses Wimba for lecture sessions as well as student interaction. Dr. Story gives students "presenter controls" so that they can each translate Greek phrases utilizing the whiteboard. One of his students wrote, "I love Wimba sessions - they really make me feel like I am sitting in class, which is very helpful."

  • When asked how he uses Wimba Live Classroom, Professor Andrew Quicke (School of Communication & the Arts) wrote, "I use Wimba to extend my threaded discussions about films they have been asked to review, and to comment on each other's films. Wimba really brings students together and they love it. Originally they were required to take part in a one hour WIMBA discussion once a month, but it proved so popular with some of them that we now have a WIMBA cafe hour every Tuesday, with no set agenda."

  • Students in Dr. Glenn Koonce's (School of Education) courses are able to communicate with experts in the field through the use of Wimba Live Classroom. Guest lecturers can access his virtual classroom via the internet or telephone and discuss critical topics with students. If the expert has a web camera, students can also see the speaker during the discussion.

Since 2006, Dr. Koonce has co-instructed his School Law course with Dr. Stephen White, an internationally known educational consultant and Senior Professional Development Associate with the Leadership and Learning Center in Denver, Colorado. This semester Dr. White shared class instruction responsibilities virtually on September 24th from an airport in the mid-west and again on October 1st from Highland Rocks, Colorado.

  • Professors Mike Burnett and Scott Hayes (School of Communication & the Arts) have been using Wimba Live Classroom to allow two course sections to interact synchronously. The synchronous lecture and discussion offers distance students the opportunity to interact with on-campus students from both course sections.

  • Dr. Amos Young (School of Divinity) uses Wimba Live Classroom for class discussions of readings and to introduce reading material for the next week.

  • In the School of Psychology & Counseling, Dr. Elisabeth Suarez uses Wimba Live Classroom as her main tool to connect with the class. She wrote,"I usually lecture with lots of interaction. I use the survey function to get them to respond to questions (either open-ended or multiple choice) and I use the breakout rooms to 'teleport' them to another room for small group discussions. I can enter each of the breakout rooms to check out how the discussion is going and then bring them back together for feedback."
