Postcards & Letters

Mailpieces with complete and properly formatted addresses allow the Postal Service to provide consistent, on-time delivery. To receive proper delivery of your mailpieces, and to benefit fully from mail processing automation you need to correctly address your mailpiece design

Postcards

Minimum size: 3 1/2" x 5"
Maximum size: 4 1/4" x 6"
Minimum paper weight: 75 lbs

Letters

Each letter-size piece must be rectangular and:

  • For height, no more than 6-1/8 or less than 3-1/2 inches high.
  • For length, no more than 11-1/2 or less than 5 inches long.
  • For thickness, no more than 0.25 or less than
    • 0.007 inch thick if no more than 4-1/4 inches high and 6 inches
      long; or
    • 0.009 inch thick if no more than 4-1/4 inches high or 6 inches
      long, or both.

The aspect ratio (length of the mailpiece divided by height) must be between 1.3 and 2.5, inclusive. Length and height are defined in C010.1.3.

If using a window envelope only the address should be showing through the window

  • Avoid skew (less than 5 degrees off the horizontal or vertical axis).
  • On a letter-size, the recommended address placement is defined by these boundaries:
    • Left: 1/2 inch from the left edge of the piece.
    • Right: 1/2 inch from the right edge of the piece.
    • Top: 2-3/4 inches from the bottom edge of the piece.
    • Bottom: 5/8 inch from the bottom edge of the piece.
  • Refer to Diagram 1B for preferred address placement

Use 10-12 point font size and avoid narrow type and script fonts. The following Microsoft Windows™ fonts read very well:
