Presentation Description:

The morning workshop is a review of ethical, legal, and professional developments over the past several years in the area of providing clinical services to sexual minorities. This is followed by an introduction to “third way” or “client-affirmative” models of care, including sexual identity therapy. The afternoon session is an intermediate training on specific models of therapy, including narrative sexual identity therapy, the use of mindfulness in navigating sexual identity conflicts, and work with sexual minorities in mixed orientation marriages.

Target Audience:

Psychologists, community counselors, school counselors, university faculty, social workers, school administrators, and teachers, and students



Education Objectives:

The workshop brings benefit to the community by increasing awareness and competence of clinicians who are either seeing clients who are survivors of traumas or are on deployment to another suffering country or region. The field and profession is enhanced by exploring how to better serve survivors of sexually traumatic situations.

Learning Objectives:

This workshop is designed to help you:

  1. Summarize ethical, legal, and professional developments in the provision of mental health services to sexual minority clients;
  2. Recognize recommended approaches to religious identity and sexual identity conflicts that are multiculturally sensitive and client-centered;
  3. Utilize sexual identity therapy to help client navigate religious identity and sexual identity conflicts in a manner that facilitates personal congruence;
  4. Utilize narrative sexual identity therapy approaches with sexual minorities;
  5. Practice mindfulness in therapy with distressed sexual minority clients. 
  6. Summarize the PARE Model for working with sexual minorities in mixed orientation marriages.

Dr. Mark Yarhouse, Psy.D. is the Hughes Endowed Chair and Professor of Psychology at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he is a core faculty member in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Yarhouse has spent several years promoting dialogue between people who view the topic of sexual identity differently. In 2000 he chaired a groundbreaking symposium at the American Psychological Association’s annual convention that brought together gay psychologists and conventionally religious psychologists to discuss common ground in treatment options for persons sorting out sexual and religious identity conflicts.

Dr. Yarhouse is the past recipient of the Gary R. Collins Award for Excellence in Christian Counseling and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence at Regent University. He was a past participant with the Ethics and Public Policy Center think tank in Washington, DC, and he was named Senior Fellow with the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities to conduct a study of sexual identity concerns among sexual minority students at Christian colleges and universities. He has been a consultant to the National Institute of Corrections to address issues facing sexual minorities in corrections. He was recently invited to write the featured white paper on sexual identity for the Christ on Campus Initiative edited by Don A. Carson for The Gospel Coalition.

Dr. Yarhouse has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and is author or co-author of several books, including most recently Understanding Sexual Identity: A Resource for Youth Ministry.
