Presentation Description:
Karen Carr is a licensed clinical psychologist living in Ghana, West Africa and serving as the Clinical Director of the Mobile Member Care Team (MMCT). MMCT is a community based model of preventative and restorative care for missionaries and has been based in Africa since 2000. Their mission is to contribute to resilience in the missions community through trainings, crisis response, mentoring of peer responders, and short term counseling. This workshop will summarize some of the research related to trauma and resilience among missionaries and will describe and illustrate MMCT's unique approach to caring for missionaries and lessons learned along the way.

The workshop will increase the audience's understanding of trauma and resilience in the missions population and will present a model of care that is scripturally based, proactive, preventative, and culturally relevant.

- Discuss the strengths of collaboration among the disciplines of psychology, theology and missions

Dr. Karen Carr is a licensed clinical psychologist living in Accra, Ghana and working as the Clinical Director of Mobile Member Care Team - West Africa (MMCT), a non-profit organization providing training, consultation, crisis response, and counseling for cross-cultural workers in Africa. Karen received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1989. She then worked in forensic and community mental health crisis work for eight years at Henrico Mental Health Services in Virginia. She began full time overseas work in Ivory Coast, Africa in 2000 with a small interdisciplinary MMCT team. After experiencing civil unrest, war, and evacuation in Ivory Coast, they relocated to Accra, Ghana where they continue to work in 14 countries in West Africa where over 10,000 missionaries are serving.
