Presentation Description:

Learn how to “turn on” students’ brains with music! Virginia Deal Largent will explain left and right hemisphere dominances and their impact on math and science. She
will shed light on the physical reactions of the brain to stimuli particularly during music, singing and moving. This cogent delivery system addresses students with needs
ranging from special education to gifted abilities. The workshop is interactive, entertaining and the skills taught are immediately applicable to the classroom.

Fun Facts:
• The subjects of math and science rely heavily on logic
and analytics. Thus, they’re mainly processed in the left
brain hemisphere.
• 70% of all teachers are left brain dominant while 70%
of all high school dropouts are right brain dominant.
• Famous right brain dominant scientists include Albert
Einstein and Thomas Edison.

Target Audience:

Parents, Pre-K to 12 teachers, school principals, guidance counselors, Sunday school teachers, educational therapists, PTA members, individuals involved in education.

Level:

Intermediate

Workshop Objectives:

  • Attendees will learn how to best prepare their student’s brains to receive information
  • The workshop will teach why we must know & understand the dramatic difference between left & right brain hemisphere learning styles and how to approach students who are their learning opposites
  • Attendees will acquire the ability to TOTALLY change their students’ attitudes and learning abilities in only a few minutes using music, singing and moving
  • Attendees will be able to use movements taught in the workshop to physiologically remove “learning roadblocks” in the brain as well as create detours in their students’ brains to reach the goal of understanding, retention & application
  • Attendees will be able to explain to others why singing educational information is the best delivery system for learning
  • Attendees will learn how to teach everything from the days of the week to advanced chemistry formulas through music

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze their own as well as their student’s Sensory Dominance profiles
  2. Discuss why learning academic information through music is highly successful & effective
  3. Summarize what happens in the brain when singing and learning
  4. Describe why emotions play such a major role in learning
  5. Apply learning academics through music into their classroom
  6. List numerous studies of music’s affects on the brain
  7. Explain why emotions must be engaged for learning to occur
  8. Describe the tremendous impact music has on the entire person, spirit, mind and body and why  it (music) is the BEST delivery system for learning

Agenda: TBD

  • 9:00 – 10:30 - Attendees will take tests to determine their own sensory dominance, hemispheric preferences and learning styles; attendees will sing and learn the Periodic Table of Elements and additional math songs; fill-in-the-blank workbooks will be provided.

    10:30 – 10:40 - Break

  • 10:40 – 11:30 - Continued interactive activities including review of scientific support of hemispheric preferences.

  • 11:30 – 12:00 - Demonstration Group 2:
Non-“Acadamiacs” students (elementary and middle school) are taught educational material through Virginia’s “Acadamiacs” method.

  • 1:30 – 1:40 - Break

  • 1:40– 2:30 - How to teach math using musical rhythmic notation and tactile manipulative methods. Completion of workbook regarding brain processes, parts of the brain and memory improvement. Review of the Periodic Table and math songs

  • 2:30 – 3:00 - Q & A Session and Wrap Up
