African American families constitute a distinct cultural group, but one in which there is a tremendous amount of diversity within and between African American families and communities. The diversity relates to place of origin, social class, gender, education, religion. The focus of this course is on understanding the differences within the African American culture, how these differences shape identity and self-esteem and impact the client’s ability to benefit from the counseling process. It also is a focus on the clinician’s knowledge, awareness and skills and their sensitivity to their own values, beliefs and biases about this group that impact how they respond to and ultimately serve this group in a culturally competent manner.
Presentation Description:
Culturally Competency: The Differences and Discrimination Within and Without the African American Home and Culture That Impacts the Provision and Receipt of Culturally Competent Christian Counseling.
Target Audience:
Those in training in the various disciplines: psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, nurse practitioners, marriage and family therapists, and certified substance abuse counselors.

This event meets or exceeds the requirements of continuing education for counselors and psychologists.
When Professional and Continuing Education hours are purchased, Professional and Continuing Education certificates of completion will be awarded to participants who attend the entire workshop. No partial credits are given.
Continuing education hours/certificates can be used for a variety of purposes including proof of training received, professional license renewal, employer reimbursement, and proof of attendance. Attendees are eligible for a Professional and Continuing Education Certificate with Professional and Continuing Education Credit Hours when purchased, provided the following is completed. Participants must attend the event in its entirety and sign in and sign out at the event. Certificates can be printed from a computer with Internet access once a participant has completed the event evaluation survey.
