This valuable CISM course is for anyone working in people-helping fields, or with those in crisis. In this course, participants will explore the “Stress Continuum,” the levels of stress including eustress, traumatic stress, burnout, countertransference, compassion fatigue, and vicarious traumatization which may occur as a result of helping others.

A discussion of coping strategies, individual self-report exercises, and an experiential group support session will assist the participating trauma provider in assessing his or her own level of stress. Stress management self care techniques will be presented, experienced, and discussed. Participants will receive the ICISF workbook and ICISF certificate.

Workshop Objectives:

This workshop is designed to enhance awareness and skills necessary to cope with the stress that many of us face in the task of helping others. It is designed specifically to address the needs and concerns of professionals on the "front line" of helping.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, CISM workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Describe and revisit the "Stress continuum"
  2. Recognize own signs and symptoms of excessive stress
  3. Consider and discuss stress as related to work as a "trauma service provider"
  4. Access and utilize a variety of stress management techniques
  5. Consider stress management in relation to "context"
  6. Define and discuss vicarious tramatization, compassion fatigue, and burnout
  7. Define stress "resilience"

CISM Presenter:

Dr. Evelyn Biles

Dr. Evelyn Biles is an Approved Instructor for several ICISF courses and has been teaching ICISF for 7 years in several countries, offering CISM courses at Regent University for the last 5 years. She also holds a doctorate in ministry from Trinity Theological Seminary, a Masters in Human Services Counseling and a Masters in Organizational Leadership from Regent University.

Dr. Biles is the founder and president of Global Mosaic International providing consulting and training to the global community. Her work with Global Mosaic International and her GMI Critical Incident Stress Management team takes her to countries struggling with influx of recent refugees from war-torn countries. In addition, Dr. Biles does a tremendous amount of consulting work around the world for those who are interested in helping the suffering. Her work has influenced leaders in Lebanon, Dominican Republic, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Brunei, Vietnam, China, and Indonesia. In 2011, Dr. Biles also presented to The International Critical Incident Stress Foundation World Congress regarding populations in Asia whom have experience stress and trauma.
