Course Description:

The purpose of this course is to identify and discuss approaches for working with values conflicts within mental health training programs. The Ethical Acculturation Model will be used as one way to frame how to effectively address these conflicts.

Target Audience:

Faculty and students associated with mental health training programs. Psychology professors, Counseling Professors, Psychology or Counseling Graduate Students

Learning Objectives:

This course will be designed to help you

1. Identify potential training values conflicts
2. Apply the Ethical Acculturation Model to conceptualize training values conflicts.
3. Summarize available training tools that may be utilized within training programs to manage training values conflicts.

Presenter:

Dr. Kathleen Bieschke is a Professor in the APA-accredited counseling psychology Ph.D. program at the Pennsylvania State University. She currently serves as Director of Training for that program, and teaches courses in group psychotherapy, pre-practicum, and sexual identity over the lifespan.  Her research interests are focused on educating and training psychologists to provide competent services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered clients. In addition, she is interested in the application of social cognitive career theory to research training in psychology. She has more than 40 peer reviewed publications and 12 book chapters. She is also a co-editor of the award winning Handbook of counseling and psychotherapy with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients. She is currently the Associate Editor of Training and Education of Professional Psychology and has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Counseling Psychology and The Counseling Psychologist.

Dr. Bieschke served as Vice-president for Education and Training, Society for Counseling Psychology (Division 17), American Psychological Association from 2004-2007. She is a commissioner for the American Psychological Association’s Commission on Accreditation. She is a fellow for both the APA Society for Counseling Psychology (Division 17) and for the APA Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues (Division 44). Dr. Bieschke has received numerous professional awards including the 2009 Distinguished Contribution to Education and Training (APA Division 44), 2001 Distinguished Book Award Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Issues (APA Division 44) American Psychological Association, and the 2000 APA Division 17 Fritz & Linn Kuder Early Career Scientist Practitioner Award. Most recently, she and her colleagues were honored by The Counseling Psychologist with the Major Contribution of the year award for their issue focused on the training implications of the Counseling Psychology Model Training Values Statement for Addressing Diversity.
