Series Description: Psy.D. Colloquia

The Psy.D. Colloquium series from the School of Psychology and Counseling's Doctorate Psychology colloquia events provides a selection of courses from outstanding professionals and scientists in psychology and related fields. Speakers in these courses have addressed a wide range of topics, from marital work with difficult couples to evolving roles for psychology in health care.

Course Description:

The business of psychotherapy encompasses all the challenges of any small business, compounded by dealing with individuals under great stress.  This course is oriented toward helping the doctor practice in a way that minimizes these stresses for patients and self.

Target Audience:

Graduate psychology students, licensed psychologists, counselors and psychiatrists in or interested in private practice

Course Objectives:

The focus of this course is to help psychologists who practice from a position of faith handle the business aspects of their practice in a manner that is clinically, financially, and spiritually effective.

Learning Objectives:

This course is designed to help you:

  1. Identify and remedy administrative areas of practice that are suspectable to business errors.
  2. Identify and remedy clinical areas of practice that must also address business concerns to minimize transference and counter-transference issues.
  3. Identify and manage spiritual aspects of practice that have an impact on clinical and business issues.
  4. Help psychologists who practice from a position of faith handle the business aspects of their practice in a manner that is clinically, financially and spiritually effective.

Instructor:

Dr. Avie Rainwater

Dr. Avie Rainwater is the Senior Partner of LifeCare Psychology Group, LLC, a multi-disciplinary mental health practice located in Florence, S.C. The practice is dedicated to integrating the benefits of professional psychology with the eternal characteristics, beliefs and practices of the Christian faith for the provision of psycho theological therapies.

Dr. Rainwater has been in practice for more than twenty-five years and is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology, is a Senior Fellow of the Biofeedback Certification Institute and a Diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. He holds a masters degree in Counseling Psychology and Clinical Psychology as well as the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His training was obtained at Oklahoma State University, Children's Medical Center of Tulsa and Dartmouth Medical School. He is a member of the Medical Staff of several hospitals, including McLeod Regional Medical Center where he serves on the Leadership Committee and the Physician Health Committee. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry for the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C.

Dr. Rainwater has been the managing partner of a private practice for over 20 years, is Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry for the Medical University of SC, has over 30 journal and chapter publications and holds board certifications in Clinical Psychology, Pain management and Biofeedback.

Psychologists: Regent University's School of Psychology and Counseling Professional and Continuing Education Program is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The School of Psychology and Counseling's Professional and Continuing Education Program maintains responsibility for this program and its contents.

Regent University School of Psychology and Counseling's Professional and Continuing Education opportunities are also eligible as psychologists training by the Virginia Board of Psychology (LCP - 18 VAC125-20-122).

Counselors: Regent University, School of Psychology and Counseling, is an NBCC-Approved Professional and Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.

In Virginia, the SPC continuing education courses may also fulfill the continuing education requirements for counselors (LPC - 18 VAC 115-20-106), substance abuse treatment providers (LSATP - 18 VAC 115-60-116), and marriage and family therapists (LMFT - 18 VAC 115-50-96).
