Presentation Description:

This course will present an overview of forensic neuropsychology in mild traumatic brain injury cases, including the science of mild traumatic brain injury and its application to civil litigation. History, basic behavioral neuroanatomy, differential diagnosis and classification, recovery and treatment as well as future implications will be covered. Participants will gain greater understanding of the role forensic neuropsychology has in mild traumatic brain injury.

Course Objectives

The course will provide the intended audience of psychologists and attorneys a guide from which to better understand the role of forensic neuropsychology in mild tbi cases, current science and evidenced based practice.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

1. list common errors in forensic neuropsychology.
2. discuss how the neuropsychological assessment is similar to a research project.
3. explain the difference between brain injury severity.
4. describe basic ethical concerns in forensic neuropsychology.

Presenter:

Dr. Scott Sautter has been Owner and Clinical Director of Hampton Roads Neuropsychology for two decades, providing assessment and intervention to known and suspected neurologic disorders with wide range of referrals from physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, rehabilitation centers, disability evaluations, judges, attorneys, and schools from school-age through elderly populations.

Dr. Sautter completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Lafayette College, Masters in Education and an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology from James Madison University and his doctorate in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University.  He then completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Virginia School of Medicine as well as becoming a Certified Forensic Examiner from the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and a Fellow in the National Academy of Neuropsychology.  Dr. Sautter has faculty appointments at Eastern Virginia Medical School, has taught doctoral level courses at area universities, and was a full time Faculty member at Regent University in the early 2000’s and continues to supervise and mentor Regent University students.  He has 14 published abstracts presented at conferences, 16 peer reviewed journal articles, 6 chapters in edited volumes, 12 grant publications and 10 dissertations chaired.  When not working he enjoys outdoor sports and activities.
