Course Description:
This presentation will review the etiological factors and characteristics of juvenile sex offenders in secure care settings, paying special attention to the controversial issues pertaining to their care. This presentation will provide information on myths, misconceptions and maladpadptive behaviors of these youth. Participants will be presented with information that facilitates understanding of the clinical characteristics of juvenile sex offenders. Participants will work through several cases where clinical scenarios are presented and through the case conceptualization process, work through the scenarios to arrive at a treatment plan.

Instructor:

Dr. Underwood is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in several states and serves as Professor and Director of Training at Regent University School of Psychology & Counseling. Dr. Underwood is the Chief Executive Officer of USA Consulting Group, business consultation and juvenile justice and mental health firm. He has served as an Executive Clinical Officer for several large residential treatment and juvenile justice programs for children adolescents with mental, substance use, behavioral, violent and sexual disorders. Previously, he was the Corporate Director of Clinical Services for the Ohio Department of Youth Services (ODYS), juvenile corrections. Additionally, he has held consulting positions with federal, state and private agencies for research, program design, development, implementation and evaluation of services.
Dr. Underwood works closely with members of Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Juvenile Corrections Program (LSUHSCJCP), and Rutgers University Graduate School of Criminal Justice. Much of Dr. Underwood’s research concerns developing culturally competent training curricula, screening and assessment instruments, and treatment interventions. Additionally, Dr. Underwood is involved with serious mental health and antisocial behaviors in adolescents; violent and chronic youth; sexually aggressive youth; youths presenting psychiatric emergencies; co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders of adolescents; maltreating families; screening and assessment of co-occurring disorders, suicide awareness programs, program design and evaluation of juvenile justice involved youth based on the best available research and practice and the development of clinically effective treatments and protocols. He has developed theoretical rationale and intervention procedures for juvenile offenders with mental health and sexual disorders in community and correctional-based residential facilities and home-based programs.
Currently, Dr. Underwood is conducting validity studies on the efficacy of cognitive behavioral intervention methodologies with adolescents with co-occurring disorders in several states. His present findings demonstrate preliminary reductions of negative mental health symptoms, behaviors and aggressions of youth presenting co-occurring disorders in residential treatment programs; evaluating the efficacy of a community residential based alternative to juvenile corrections and examining the integration of evidenced based mental health treatments into the neighborhood. His social policy interests include the development of innovative methods of mental health services for disadvantaged children and their families.
