Series Description: Spiritual Integration

The Spiritual Integration series provides studies in the area of spirituality and mental health. With sound integration and ethical clinical practice in mind, preeminent professionals discuss topics from faith-based interventions to collaborating with faith professionals within our communities. Through the review of traditional and current literature, this series examines the role of faith and spirituality in counseling and psychology.

Course Description:

This is a group discussion of the book by David Myers and Letha Scanzoni that advocates gay marriage from a Christian perspective. The group discussion takes place in the School of Psychology & Counseling at Regent University, Virginia Beach, Virginia. The discussion is led by Dr. Mark Yarhouse and several faculty members and students join in on a discussion of each of the chapters by Myers and Scanzoni. Presented in streamed WMV video.


Learning Objectives:

This course is designed to help you:

  1. Analyze different perspectives on how marriage is defined and how it relates to happiness.
  2. Descibe how arguments for the biological basis of sexual identity factor into the case for gay marriage.
  3. Explain different views on how to interpret Scripture which relates to homosexuality.
  4. Assess how the Church can become more supportive of individuals who are struggling with sexual identity issues.

Instructor:

Dr. Mark Yarhouse is the Rosemarie Scotti Hughes Endowed Chair of Christian Thought in Mental Health Practice and Professor of Psychology at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is a core faculty member in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, teaching Applied Clinical Integration, Family Therapy and Human Sexuality. He is also the director of the Institute for the Study of Sexual Identity at Regent (www.sexualidentityinstitute.org), a research team focused on studying issues of sexual identity. Dr. Yarhouse is co-author of several books, including Ex-Gays? A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation and a Christian perspective on psychopathology titled Modern Psychopathologies: A Comprehensive Christian Appraisal. Dr. Yarhouse also keeps a small private practice in the Hampton Roads area, providing individual, couples, and family therapy. He specializes in marriage and family therapy, as well as issues related to sexual and gender identity. He is co-author of three books on homosexuality and sexual identity.

Counselors: Regent University, School of Psychology and Counseling, is an NBCC-Approved Professional and Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.
