Presentation Description:

Do you have a friend or family member who suffers from Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other neurological deficiencies that impairs their ability to make decisions? Are you concerned about their competency and the legal process in meeting their needs? Are you a professional who works with clients with neurological deficiencies or their families? This course will provide professionals in various fields, as well as families, with information about civil competency assessment.

This course will increase the awareness of various professionals who work with adults who have known or suspected neurocognitive deficits that may render them incompetent for decision-making. Ethics, practical heuristic guide for clinical decision making and a scientific methodology for objective assessment will be presented. Functional capacity for treatment consent, financial, testamentary, driving, and independent living will be reviewed.

Course Objectives

The course objective will be to provide greater awareness of the science and practice of forensic neuropsychology in civil competency assessment and the variety of applications.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. list ethical concerns in competency assessment.
2. apply a heuristic guide to clinical decision making in competency assessment.
3. describe the various applications of forensic neuropsychology to competency assessment.

Presenter:

Dr. Scott Sautter has been Owner and Clinical Director of Hampton Roads Neuropsychology for two decades, providing assessment and intervention to known and suspected neurologic disorders with wide range of referrals from physicians, hospitals, insurance companies, rehabilitation centers, disability evaluations, judges, attorneys, and schools from school-age through elderly populations.

Dr. Sautter completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Lafayette College, Masters in Education and an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology from James Madison University and his doctorate in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University.  He then completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Virginia School of Medicine as well as becoming a Certified Forensic Examiner from the Institute of Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology and a Fellow in the National Academy of Neuropsychology.  Dr. Sautter has faculty appointments at Eastern Virginia Medical School, has taught doctoral level courses at area universities, and was a full time Faculty member at Regent University in the early 2000’s and continues to supervise and mentor Regent University students.  He has 14 published abstracts presented at conferences, 16 peer reviewed journal articles, 6 chapters in edited volumes, 12 grant publications and 10 dissertations chaired.  When not working he enjoys outdoor sports and activities.
