Pentecostalism & Prosperity Symposium
The Socio-Economics of Global Renewal
Co-sponsored by the Schools of Undergraduate Studies and Divinity
Symposium schedule:
February 21, 2:00-5:30 pm, Library Auditorium
February 22, 2:00-5:30 pm, Library Auditorium
This symposium focuses on the interface of Renewal Christianity, the prosperity gospel, and the global economy. It brings together a group of scholars from various disciplines to consider:
- the theological and religious rationalizations for prosperity movements, including case studies of Renewal movements across the global South;
- the relationship between economic considerations and conversion to the Renewal movement in general and to prosperity teaching more particularly;
- the phenomenology of a "prosperity lifestyle": spending decisions, investment strategies, and the accrual of social or political capital from association with Renewal Christianity and its prosperity segments;
- how the prosperity message both is shaped by and also contributes to the current neoliberal economy on local and global scales;
- the relationship, if any, between the expansion of prosperity messages and economic booms and recessions.
