Internship Information Packet (volunteer)

Internship Process (experience only)

Follow these steps if you plan to do an internship for EXPERIENCE ONLY (not for credit). This type of internship is referred to as a volunteer internship.

1. Information packet
   
   At the beginning of your junior year: Get an information packet from Career Services, School of Undergraduate Studies, CRB 103 or online .
2. Submit forms to Career Services
   
   Give the Director of Career Services, Kita Graham, the appropriate completed information packet .
3. Contact your internship worksite
   
   Ask your internship worksite supervisor for a detailed job description.
4. Internship approved
   
   The Director of Career Services will approve your internship.
5. Primary contact
   
   Your primary Regent contact throughout your volunteer internship is the Director of Career Services.
6. Begin internship
   
   Start your volunteer internship experience! Treat this volunteer internship as an actual job. Always be prompt and attentive.
7. Evaluate progress
   
   The Director of Career Services and worksite supervisor will coordinate to evaluate your volunteer internship progress.
8. Submit required paper
   
   A reflection paper detailing your volunteer experience is required. See Director of Career Services for assignment details.
9. Next steps
   
   Contact Career Services at the end of your volunteer internship experience. This is an opportunity to re-establish your goals, update your resume and consider your career options.

• What is a volunteer internship?
  
  A volunteer internship is a temporary work assignment through which students integrate academic and professional experience. You will not earn academic credit, but get hands-on experience related to your career and academic goals. You can establish excellent networking contacts while building your resume!
  
  We recommended that you begin your volunteer internship in your junior year. The timing can help prepare you for the classroom to workforce transition.
• Will Regent help me find a volunteer internship?
  
  The Career Services staff will assist you in searching for a volunteer internship, but each student must take the initiative to seek opportunities. We recommended that you conduct your volunteer internship search just as you would an actual job search! Contact the office at 757.352.4348 or website to find out what companies are looking for volunteers.
• I do not live in Virginia Beach or Hampton Roads area. Can I still do a volunteer internship?
  
  Yes. Whether you are an online or a residential student, you can do a volunteer internship anywhere within the United States. Once your volunteer internship site is approved, you can begin the journey!
• How soon should I begin searching for a volunteer internship?
  
  Although you will not receive academic credit, some companies have deadlines and selection processes. Volunteer internship opportunities can be competitive. Inquire early to find out the details. We recommend that you begin your volunteer internship paperwork process at least six months before starting your assignment.
• Is there a volunteer internship course?
  
  No. There is not a volunteer internship course. The details are outlined on this page.
• Will I have a job description, supervisor, and time card?
  
  The sponsoring company or organization must provide Regent with a formal job description. It should include duties, tasks, and responsibilities. It will be up to your on-site supervisor to monitor your work hours during the volunteer internship. You will also be required to keep a learning log detailing accomplished tasks and learning reflections.
  
  If your internship experience is not approved for academic credit, it is still a valuable learning opportunity. You can establish excellent networking contacts while building your resume!
• Is the internship going to be evaluated?
  
  The School of Undergraduate Studies Director of Career Services, Kita Graham, will evaluate your learning log, mid-term and final evaluations.
