Internship Information Packet (for academic credit)

Internship Process

Follow these steps if you plan to take an internship for credit.

1. Information packet
   
   At the beginning of your junior year: Get an information packet from Career Services, School of Undergraduate Studies, CRB 103 or online .
2. Contact department chair
   
   Provide your department chair with the appropriate completed required forms (see below).
3. Contact your internship worksite
   
   Ask your internship worksite supervisor for a detailed job description.
4. Department chair approval
   
   Your department chair will approve your internship course for credit.
5. Faculty sponsor
   
   You will be assigned a faculty sponsor (course instructor).
6. Begin internship
   
   Start your internship! Treat this experience like an actual job. Be prompt and attentive.
7. Evaluate progress
   
   Your faculty sponsor and worksite supervisor will coordinate to evaluate course requirements. Each school has different requirements. Confirm yours before starting the internship.
8. Submit assignments
   
   It is your responsibility to complete mid-term and final assignments by the agreed upon date. Please communicate frequently with your faculty sponsor and worksite supervisor.
9. Contact Career Services
   
   Contact Career Services at the end of your internship. This is an opportunity to re-establish your goals, update your resume and consider your career options.

Frequently Asked Questions

• What is an internship?
  
  An internship is a temporary employment opportunity through which students integrate academic and professional experience. You will get hands-on experience related to your career and academic goals. We recommended that you begin your internship in your junior year. The timing can help prepare you for the classroom to workforce transition.
• Will Regent help me find an internship?
  
  The Career Services staff will assist you in searching for an internship, but each student must take the initiative to seek opportunities. We recommend that you conduct your internship search just as you would a job search! Contact the office at 757.352.4348 or kgraham@regent.edu to find out what companies are looking for interns.
• Do I get paid for doing an internship?
  
  Most companies do not offer a financial incentive to interns. However, some do. If you don't get paid, the experience you will gain is valuable! Internships often lead to important networking opportunities as well as future employment.
• I do not live in Virginia Beach or Hampton Roads area. Can I still do an internship?
  
  Yes. Whether you are an online or a residential student, you can do an internship anywhere within the United States. Once your internship site is approved, you can begin the journey!
• How soon should I begin searching for an internship?
  
  Some company deadlines range from February to May if you plan to do a summer internship. Fall and spring internships can have early deadlines. It may be helpful to identify the selection criteria too. Internship opportunities can be competitive. We recommend that you begin your internship paperwork process at least six months before starting your assignment.
• What should I do to enroll in an internship course?
  
  Contact the Career Services Office (CRB 103 or 757.352.4348) to speak with a representative for instructions.

• How many credit hours will I earn?
  
  Depending on your major, you will register for the 3-to-6 credit-hour credit course: ENGL 495, GOVT 497, COMM 495, GBUS 495, or PYSC 495. Learn more about the specific tuition costs.
  
  If your internship experience is not approved for academic credit, it is still a valuable learning opportunity. You can establish excellent networking contacts while building your resume! See the Volunteer Internship information.
• Will I have a job description, supervisor, and time card?
  
  The sponsoring company or organization must provide Regent with a formal job description. It should include duties, tasks, and responsibilities. It will be up to your on-site supervisor to monitor the 96 required work hours during the internship. You will also be required to keep a learning log detailing accomplished tasks and learning reflections.
• Is the internship going to be evaluated?
  
  You will be assigned a Regent faculty sponsor (course instructor), who will administer your mid-term and final evaluations, including an essay. Evaluation requirements vary for each major. It is important to clarify yours before beginning the internship. You will receive your grade at the end of term after your faculty sponsor records it in the Registrar's Office.
