New Debate Club Seeks to Make its Mark
January 20, 2010
Regent Debate, one of the school's newest undergraduate clubs, is currently preparing for their first competition in Parliamentary Debate that will be held at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, VA on January 21 - 23, 2010. Parliamentary-styled debate is an extemporaneous form of oratory; two-person teams are given a topic fifteen minutes before they are to give a presentation before the House asking the Speaker of the House to affirm their resolution. This team then faces the criticism of the opposition. In a structured turn-based debate forum, the two sides argue the resolution until each are given a short rebuttal period. Then the decision is left to the judge, only forty minutes after the round has begun.
Currently, the competitive Debate Team consists of three partnerships: the two team captains, Jason Hughey and Leah Stiles; Benjamin Kay and Melody Osborne; Brett Lonadier and Katie Nace. Their coach is Lyhana Rael Brewer. After they return from Patrick Henry, the Debate Society will begin preparations for the National Parliamentary Competition to be held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX, March 19 - 22, 2010.
