Debate gives students a great opportunity to practice critical thinking, research, and speaking skills – traits which are invaluable to any student, regardless of major or discipline. Moreover, as Christians, we believe that all Christians are commended, in the words of 1 Peter 3:15-16, to always be "prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame." Debate can help students learn the necessary skills to do this well.
