Regent Journal of Law & Public Policy

A forum for a Christian perspective on law and public policy.

The Regent Journal of Law & Public Policy (“RJLPP”) Staff selection process is open to students from both the Regent University School of Law (“Law School”) and the Robertson School of Government (“RSG”).

Law School Students

Law School students who meet the minimum threshold of a 2.5 cumulative Law School GPA and have completed at least 30 credit hours in the Law School are encouraged to apply. There are several methods of application available to Law School students.

Law School Write-on Competition

Law School students who meet the threshold requirements may apply for RJLPP membership by participating in the annual Law School Write-On Competition and selecting the RJLPP as a primary or alternative choice. The Law School Write-On Competition is conducted at the end of each spring semester and includes the following requirements: submission of a law review style article and completion of a Bluebook exercise.

Law School students who rank in the top 5% of their class at the end of the Spring Semester AND submit a Bluebook exercise that scores in either (1) the top half of all submissions on the Bluebook exercise; OR (2) at least 70% on the Bluebook exercise may “grade-on” to become RJLPP Staff members. Such students are not required to submit a law review style article.

The topic for the annual Law School Write-On Competition is chosen by the editors of the Law School’s academic journals and is the same for all applicants. The editors of such journals set the deadline for submission, and invitations are usually extended to desired staff members several weeks after the submission deadline (usually by early July). All membership invitations are extended on the basis of the applicant’s performance in the Law School Write-On Competition and the RJLPP’s staff position openings for the upcoming year.

Re-Application of Former RJLPP Staff Joint Degree Students

Law School students are not permitted to serve on any academic publication during their first 30 credit hours of Law School. Therefore, Joint Degree students may not participate as members of the RJLPP during their first 30 credit hours of Law School. However, Joint Degree students who have previously served on the RJLPP as RSG students and meet the minimum threshold requirements for Law School students may “grade-on” to the RJLPP, as long as their performance as RJLPP Staff members met the level of character, commitment, and competency required of RJLPP Staff members.

Potential Reopening of RJLPP “Grade-on” Process

The RJLPP reserves the right to reopen its applicant selection process for a limited time after the Law School Write-On Competition is complete. Should the RJLPP choose to reopen its application process, Law School students who rank in the top 10% of their class at the end of the most recent Spring Semester, meet the minimum threshold requirements, submit a quality writing sample from an RJLPP-approved Law School course, AND submit a Bluebook exercise that scores in accordance with the requirements announced at the time application may “grade-on” to become RJLPP Staff members.

RSG Students

The RJLPP member selection process is open to all RSG students who have completed at least 15 credit hours and have a 3.6 cumulative RSG GPA. RSG students who meet the threshold requirements may apply for RJLPP membership through the RSG Write-On Competition. The RSG Write-On Competition requires applicants to submit a writing sample that has been written in connection with their RSG coursework. The writing sample must be at least 10 pages long, and must be cited in either Bluebook or Turabian style (Bluebook preferred). RSG applicants must also complete a Bluebook exercise.
