Getting around Strasbourg

For an easy-to-read and unobtrusive map, use Google maps and take screen shots on your mobile device. You can also get a good paper map from the Tourist Center in Strasbourg. (Located in Cathedral Square, on the left side if you are facing the Cathedral.)

Walking directions to the Foyer from the Strasbourg train station:

  1. Exit the glass front of the train station out the main front doors. Proceed down the main sidewalk through the middle of the grassy area.
  2. Cross the street and enter a pedestrian-only road. A McDonald's will be on the left corner. Keep to the left side of the street. Keep walking and the pedestrian-only road will turn into a regular street.
  3. Proceed straight on this road all the way down until you reach the river, keeping on the left side. You should see a church across the river in front of you.
  4. Cross the two streets that stand between you and the sidewalk running next to the river. Do not cross the river at this bridge.
  5. Once on the river path, turn left and follow the river down for quite a ways. You will notice that the sidewalk is divided between a walking side and a biking side. Honor that division.
  6. Keep walking straight. Stick on the sidewalk that hugs the river and pass three bridges on your right. (Don't walk down on the sidewalk at river level, stick to the sidewalk up at street level.)
  7. At the fourth bridge, turn right. Before turning right, you should see a small cafe (brasserie) on your left across the street. Once you turn right to cross the river, you should also see the bell tower of the Strasbourg Cathedral appearing straight ahead. Head towards it! (That is usually the bottom line whenever you are trying to get to the Foyer - look for the Cathedral and head towards it.)
  8. Keep walking straight for a little ways. You should pass a tiny park on your right. At some point, cross over to the left side of the street and keep going.
  9. You will see on the left-hand side of the road a tram station and an open brick space. That is Place Broglie. You are almost to the Foyer; keep walking straight towards that Cathedral.
  10. The asphalt street pavement will turn into cobblestones and the street name is Rue du Dôme. Proceed straight.
  11. Turn left on an alley called Rue des Echasses. A cafe should be on the corner. The blue street sign should be on the cafe's side wall. The Foyer is on this street.
  12. Proceed straight until you reach two huge wooden doors on your left. Congratulations, you have arrived home! If the door is locked, ring the buzzer to talk to the watchman.

Total distance: 1 mile

Total time: 15-25 minutes

Tram-and-walking directions to the Foyer from the Strasbourg train station:

  1. Exit the glass front of the train station out the left front doors. Through some trees, at short distance from the side of the train station, you should see a tram stop nestled along the side of a building. That should be the "C" Line.
  2. Purchase your ticket from the machine and validate it with the other, smaller machine. Keep the ticket with you.
  3. For your information, you are starting at the "Gare Centrale" tram stop, a terminus for the "C" Line.
  4. Get aboard the tram headed for the "Neuhof R. Reuss" tram stop. Your stop is "Broglie."
  5. Get off at "Broglie." You will see an open brick space. That is Place Broglie. Walk to the 4-way intersection. Find the Cathedral spire so that you are facing it and it is straight down the street in front of you.
  6. Head toward the Cathedral on Rue du Dôme. If you are heading the right way, it should quickly turn into a cobblestone street.
  7. Turn left on an alley called Rue des Echasses. A cafe should be on the corner. The blue street sign should be on the cafe's side wall. The Foyer is on this street.
  8. Proceed straight until you reach two huge wooden doors on your left. Congratulations, you have arrived home! If the door is locked, ring the buzzer to talk to the watchman.

Total time: 10-15 minutes.
