LexisNexis US Serials Set Digital Collection

LexisNexis’ U.S. Serials Set Digital Collection provides web-based full-text access to all the material included in the CIS U.S. Serial Set collection on microfiche.

The U.S. Serial Set, an ongoing collection of U.S. Government publications compiled under the directive of Congress, provides unparalleled insight into the legislative intent of laws enacted by Congress before1970.  For 1970 and beyond, this index references documents available in the Law Library’s microfiche collection.  The Library of Congress may also have these documents at http://thomas.loc.gov.  The Serial Set includes: congressional publications, such as committee reports on public and private legislation, House and Senate journals, numerous investigations, directories, rule manuals, and histories of Congress and the Capitol; executive branch publications, including department and agency annual reports and special recurring publications; and nongovernmental publications, including reprints from magazines, newspapers, professional journals, and other sources.

Until the release of this database, the primary method of accessing these pages comprising the U.S. Serials set was via microfiche.  Users can now execute full-text searches or search by:

  • Title of document (both CIS descriptive title as well as title on title page)
  • Document type (e.g. annual reports, hearings, or private relief actions)
  • Statutes at Large citation, bill number, or public law number
  • Subject terms
  • Keyword indexing to illustrations and statistical tables
  • Corporate (committee, president or agency) or personal authors
  • Petitioners or witnesses
  • Document/report number
  • Serial volume number
  • SuDoc number
Results will consist of metadata describing the retrieved document and a pdf image.  Users can print selected pages or the entire document at one time. “Smart pdfs” enable users to perform keyword searches within each pdf to locate the exact page or pages where search terms occur within a document.
