Hugh Heclo

Hugh HecloClarence J. Robinson Professor of Public Affairs, George Mason University

Formerly a Harvard University professor whose books have received numerous national awards, Hugh Heclo has served as an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Public Administration, a Guggenheim Fellow, Brookings Institution Senior Fellow, and Chair of the Ford Foundation Research Advisory Committee, which published The Common Good: Social Welfare and the American Future. The American Political Science Association awarded him the John Gaus lifetime achievement award in 2002. His books include Christianity and American Democracy, A Government of Strangers, and (forthcoming in spring 2008) Thinking Institutionally. He received the A.B. degree from George Washington University, the M.A. from Manchester University (England), and the Ph.D. from Yale University.
