INTERNSHIP REGISTRATION

The Process for Securing an Internship

Read through the Internship Program Guide prior to beginning the internship process.

(Updated! Follow these steps in registering for your internship)

1. RESEARCH internship opportunities, taking into consideration those requirements necessary to complete the internship proposal. (You may contact Career Services for potential internship opportunities.)

2. MAKE an appointment with your faculty advisor and Career Services to obtain initial approval and decide whether your faculty advisor or another faculty member will serve as your internship advisor.

3. BEFORE submitting an application for the external organization (if required), submit it first to the internship advisor for review.

4. SUBMIT the approved application to the external organization. If accepted…

5. SUBMIT an internship proposal to your academic advisor for final approval

6. FILL OUT an Individual Study Form and obtain the Dean’s and your academic advisor’s signatures.

7. BEFORE THE FINAL DAY OF REGISTRATION for the semester you intend to begin the internship, take the Individual Study Form and the internship proposal to the Student Services Manager to process your registration.

The Internship Proposal

A written internship proposal must be prepared by the student, approved by the internship advisor and the academic dean. Upon approval, a copy must be submitted along with the Individual Study Form to the Student Services Manager before the student can register for internship credit.  A second copy of the Internship Proposal should be emailed to the Director of Career Services.  The proposal may be brief but must contain the information below. An example of such a proposal may be found in the Internship Program Guide.

1. A rationale, i.e., a discussion of academic goals, and how the position sought fits into the student's overall program and career goals.

2. Qualifications of the student for the position sought.

3. Personal objectives for the student during the Internship.

4. The work to be performed, such as various tasks, responsibilities and activities. This section concentrates on the services that the student will provide to satisfy the needs of the sponsoring agency.

5. A schedule, including procedural details such as the dates and length of the internship, and hours and days per week.

6. Name and address of the sponsoring agency, and the name and telephone number of the intended Supervisor.
