Reading Specialist Program, M.Ed. - Reading Specialist Certification
The Reading Specialist endorsement program is designed to meet the growing demand for trained reading specialists by providing competency-based courses that fulfill the requirements for a Virginia Reading Specialist endorsement. Our Reading Specialist program courses offer a balanced perspective on teaching reading - preparing teachers in the areas of supervision, communication skills, technology, reading assessment, instruction, curriculum and research.

- Length: 36 credit hours. May be completed in 18-24 months
- Format: This program may be taken entirely online, in a hybrid format or online with a summer residency. Students may enter the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.

Reading Specialist graduates will be able to:
- Embrace integration of the Christian Faith to professional practice.
- Apply all of the Virginia Department of Education competencies and skills required for state licensure.
- Exhibit advanced writing skills using APA Format.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills through reflection, scholarship and professionalism.
- Apply research to practice.
NOTE: The State of Virginia requires a Master's degree, professional teaching license and a minimum of three years of general teaching experience in which reading is of primary importance in order to earn the Reading Specialist endorsement. Candidates for the Reading Specialist endorsement are required to take and pass the Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE) Assessment for Reading Specialists prior to receiving the degree and being recommended for licensure/endorsement.
