Reading Specialist Endorsement
The Reading Specialist Endorsement is designed to meet the growing demand for trained reading specialists by providing competency-based courses that fulfill the requirements for a Virginia Endorsement. Our Reading Specialist courses offer a balanced perspective on teaching reading - preparing teachers in the areas of supervision, communication skills, technology, reading assessment, instruction, curriculum and research.
Students may earn the Reading Specialist Endorsement through the Individualized Degree Plan or through our K-12 Special Education Program.

- The Individualized –Reading Specialist Program is offered completely online. Students may begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.
- The Special Education Program is delivered through Blackboard (an online teaching instrument), hybrid classes, and/or supplemented with three weeks of face-to-face instruction during the summer residency. Students may begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer.
- Credit Hours:
- Individualized Reading Specialist: 32 credit hours.
- Special Education – Reading Specialist: 51 credit hours.

Reading Specialist graduates will be able to:
- Embrace integration of the Christian Faith to professional practice.
- Apply all of the Virginia Department of Education competencies and skills required for state licensure.
- Exhibit advanced writing skills using APA Format.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills through reflection, scholarship and professionalism.
- Apply research to practice.
NOTE: The State of Virginia requires a Master’s Degree and a minimum of three years of general teaching experience in which reading is of primary importance in order to earn the reading specialist endorsement. Candidates for the Reading Specialist endorsement are required to take and pass the Virginia Reading Assessment for Reading Specialists prior to receiving the degree and being recommended for licensure/endorsement.
