Writing Styles Guide

For students enrolled in the School of Divinity

The School of Divinity requires that all written work be submitted in Turabian style. From your course syllabus:

All term papers and essays must follow the format outlined by Kate Turabian in A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (ISBN 978-0226823379) and the School of Divinity’s Writing Supplement Guidelines.

Professors may specify additional or supplemental style requirements for any assignment. In an effort to provide assistance to students working on assignments while enrolled in the School of Divinity, compiled here is a list of resources for the most commonly required style forms.

Turabian

Turabian is a style guide written by Kate L. Turabian. Various guides exist on the Internet but the original guide is published as a book, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations [NW] (ISBN 978-0226823379, available in the University Library). Students should consult this regularly updated manual for the latest guides for paper format and citation requirements.

Society of Biblical Literature (SBL)

SBL is the standard for biblical studies and goes beyond Turabian in specifying methods for citing recourses not available in Turabian. SBL is often required for students writing papers related to the study of biblical literature. Students who plan to publish works in academic journals should be familiar with the style as it is required for submitting papers to some journals.

The Society of Biblical Literature publishes a style manual on their web site [NW], The SBL Handbook of Style. The entire book can be downloaded for reference or it can be found in the Regent University Library [NW]. Also available on the SBL web site is a student supplement for the SBL Handbook of Style and fonts for use in presenting biblical text with a paper.

Chicago Manual of Style

The Chicago Manual of Style is the root standard from which Turabian and SBL are derived. It is an exhaustive style guide and is used in many areas of academics. The entire Chicago Manual of Style is available online [NW], and fully searchable.
