School of Psychology & Counseling ePortfolios

Blackboard

Using Blackboard's Portfolio system is an easy way to create and host an ePortfolio. You can use a simple templated guide to create the portfolio, right in Blackboard. You also have the option to host a portfolio which was not created in Blackboard.

Options

Blackboard Wizard

You can use Blackboard's Wizard to easily create your ePortfolio without knowledge of html. The Wizard will walk you through the steps. You will store your documents in the Blackboard Content mangement area and create your webpages using the wizard. When you're finished, you can set permissions for viewing to public or private. Click here for a step-by-step guide to accessing Blackboard's portfolio wizard.

Using a Different Program - Uploading to Blackboard

You can use a external program outside of Blackboard, like Dreamweaver, to create your ePortfolio website. When you're finished creating your ePortfolio, you can upload your webpages and files to Blackboard. Click here for a detailed step-by-step guide to putting a portfolio you made on Blackboard.

Benefits and Disadvantages

Pros:

  • You can quickly and easily make a site in Blackboard without knowledge of html using the Blackboard wizard, or make your own customized ePortfolio and upload it.
  • Blackboard offers free storage (hosting) for your site during your program.
  • Blackboard gives you options to store your portfolio publicly or privately. You can also specifically choose which students and professors you want to view your site.
  • You will have one location for accessing your courses, assignments, other stored documents and your ePortfolio.

Cons:

  • After you graduate, your site will be deleted. If you want to keep it, you must save your portfolio and put it on a different hosting site prior to graduation.
  • The portfolio can be exported from Blackboard, but you will need knowledge of html or access to a website creating application like Dreamweaver to edit it. If you created it using one of these other options, this will not be a problem.
  • If you use Blackboard's wizard, you are limited in your design and customization options.
  • If you build your ePortfolio using Blackboard's wizard, you will need access to the Internet to edit your website files.
