Dean of Regent University's School of Psychology Receives Pioneer Award
May 2, 2008
The dynamics of a well-respected leader can be best understood through the testimonies of those she leads. Sometimes words are not enough to capture the full appreciation of quality leadership.
Dr. Rosemarie Scotti Hughes, Dean of Regent University's School of Psychology & Counseling (SPC), was recently surprised by the SPC faculty and staff with a Pioneer Award recognizing her outstanding leadership.
“The Pioneer Award is to signify our respect and admiration for Dean Hughes' efforts and her determination in making our school great,” said Sharon Piper, SPC Associate Dean for Administration.
Piper presented the Pioneer Award to Dr. Hughes in front of a packed room of SPC colleagues, who enthusiastically applauded the Dean as she received the award.
“Dr. Hughes has been our leader and a critical catalyst for the growth of the School of Psychology & Counseling from its early and humble beginnings,” said Dr. Bill Hathaway, Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. “Under her leadership, the school transitioned from a small faculty with overlapping roles to a diverse group of programs with well-defined, well resourced and distinct but related training missions.
Under Hughes' leadership, SPC has exceeded its expectations in meeting a number of goals. Accomplishments include the multiple accreditations of its programs, including the first accredited online doctoral program in counselor education; the development of the Human Services Counseling Program, which is an alternative training model for aspiring counselors; and the improvement of Regent SPC's counseling services offered to the campus and community.
“Dean Hughes is one of the most honest and forthright supervisors I've had the pleasure of working with,” said Dr. Benjamin B. Keyes, Associate Professor and Director for the Master of Arts Program in Counseling. “Dean Hughes is a pioneer and a visionary in the truest sense. Her positive influence can be felt throughout the school and will stay with students and faculty for a lifetime.”
Dr. Mark Rehfuss, Associate Dean for the SPC and Associate Professor for the Doctoral Program in Counselor Education & Supervision, described Dean Hughes as an innovator who leads with a confidence, enthusiasm and expectation of excellence. Dr. James Sells, Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in Counselor Education & Supervision, attributes Hughes' creativity and innovation as responsible for the formation and development of Regent's School of Psychology & Counseling. He continued, “Her vision has led to a cutting edge graduate education for Christian counselors and psychologists who do indeed change the world of many people.”
The room was full of laughter, love and tears when Dr. Hughes accepted the Pioneer Award . The emotions that followed reflected the unspoken testimony of well-respected leadership, gratitude and cohesion among the SPC faculty and staff.
