Dr. Linda Philpot
Human Services Counseling Program

Physician

“This program has helped me do the job I was trained to do better.”

While Dr. Linda Philpot may practice medicine in a remote part of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, “accessible” is the word that best describes her. As a family physician, Philpot longed for what she labels “modern medicine delivered the old-fashioned way.” So in 2002, with Philpot on the medical side and her husband handling the business end, Eastville Medical Care became a reality. Her 800-square-foot office is actually located in her house on the Eastern Shore. But if you’re a patient and there’s a need, she’ll come to yours. “Dr. Linda,” as her patients know her, sees approximately 50 patients a week because “if you see more than that, you can’t really get to know them.”

Counseling plays a large role in the way Philpot believes medicine should be practiced. “Inner healing is part of healing; you can’t separate them,” she says, adding that a traditional medical education doesn’t include things like listening skills. When Philpot’s daughter-in-law, a former Regent student, told her about the university, she investigated. Regent’s Human Services Counseling (HSC) program was just what the doctor ordered. “I can’t say enough about it,” says Philpot, winner of Regent’s 2007 Award of Excellence. “This program has helped me do the job I was trained to do better.”

These days, you’ll find the good doctor involved in mission work, charitable organizations and in the day-to-day life of her beautiful Eastern Shore community. And her patients? You’ll notice them, too. They’re the ones wearing the distinctive Eastville Medical Center T-shirts. “You can’t buy them at any price,” laughs Philpot. Only patients who quit smoking, lose weight, better manage health conditions or, as she puts it, “reclaim their own health and lives” can earn the coveted shirt. “I didn’t go into medicine for the money,” she says. “I’m in it for the people!”
