We are honored that you are interested in applying to the Doctoral Program in Counselor Education and Supervision (PhD-CES). The following are the admissions prerequisites and requirements:
1. Hold a 48-hour master's degree in counseling or a significantly related field such as psychology or social work from a regionally accredited institution. Those with less than 48 hours may have to take additional coursework as a prerequisite to admission or concurrently with their first year in the program.
2. Have at least one year of experience in a mental health field (highly desirable).
3. Demonstrate an interest in Counselor Education, teaching, research, professional service, clinical practice, and/or counseling supervision.
4. Have clearly stated counselor education and supervision-related career goals.
5. Have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA in your graduate level coursework.
6. Submit a completed PhD-CES application with a $50 nonrefundable application fee. The application deadline is January 15th.
7. Submit official copies of transcripts from each college or university attended, submitted in a sealed envelope with an authorized signature across the flap of the envelope.
8. Submit official GRE scores. If you have previously taken the GRE but your scores are more than 5 years old, you will need to re-take the test. The GRE-W portion of the general test is used to determine writing proficiency, a Board of Trustees mandate for admissions and graduation. The GRE requirement cannot be waived. For more information about the GRE you can contact:
GRE: Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ 08541, 609-771-7670
/ 866-473-4373, www.ets.org/gre/
9. Submit a résumé or curriculum vita.
10. Submit an APA formatted scholarly writing sample (maximum of 10 pages)
11. Submit a 10 to 15 minute DVD of a counseling session that is representative of applicant’s counseling skills (disk cannot be returned to applicant)
12. Submit three recommendations; one each from a clergy, employer/supervisor and a person who has been in a position to evaluate your clinical skills such as a former or current counseling professor, or a practicing counselor or psychologist who has observed your clinical work is highly suggested. Recommendations must be in a sealed envelope with the reference's signature over the seal; those received in any other format will be returned.
13. Submit a Personal Goals Statement.
Applicant information will be reviewed and those applicants moving to the next level of evaluation will be invited to participate in the interview process, which includes both a group interview and a personal interview with School of Psychology and Counseling faculty. Participation in this interview process is expected; interviewed applicants will bear the expenses associated with travel to the Virginia Beach campus. It is expected that the candidate will be willing to discuss personal history within the interview process.
Our preference is to have the in-person interview. In rare instances where circumstances do not permit, an alternative method such as telephone will be considered.
Applicants invited to the interview should keep in mind that an interview does not assure admission. The School of Psychology and Counseling reserves the right to determine in its sole discretion whether a candidate is suitable for admission to the Ph.D. program.
All forms related to application to the PhD-CES program may be requested through the School of Psychology and Counseling Admissions Office. Please feel free to contact Katie Pecht, Admissions Counselor, at 757-226-4132 or email psycoun@regent.edu, should you have any further questions about the admissions process.
