Financial Information -
Doctoral Program in Counselor Education & Supervision

Cost of Program/Working through Program

Estimated cost per credit hour for academic year 2007-2008 is $695. There will also be costs associated with the residency that students will need to plan to pay; as those costs are finalized, information will be posted.

As we expect a large proportion of our students in the PhD-CES program to be adult learners, many of whom may be in private practice or working full-time in the mental health field, we are aware of the need and/or desire of students to continue working, either part-time or full-time. The PhD-CES program is a full-time Doctoral program that will be rigorous and demanding. The number of courses has been limited, at least during the first two years of the program, to two each term for a total of six hours. You should be aware that research shows that the amount of time a student spends preparing for online coursework is greater than for an in-class format. Students can expect a minimum of 20-25 hours per week of computer and research-related work. You are encouraged to seek a balance between work, family and personal responsibilities and your commitment to the PhD-CES program, and bear in mind the demanding and high-level preparation required to matriculate as a doctoral student.

Financial Aid

You may examine the School of Psychology and Counseling's financial aid website for information about the scholarships and financial aid available, as well as the university's financial aid website

For the first two years of the PhD-CES program, each term has a prescribed course structure of two 3-credit hour courses for a total of 6 credit hours a semester (Fall, Spring and Summer terms). This maximum of 6 credit hours a term does not qualify students domiciled in the state of Virginia for the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant program (VTAG – TAGP); however, this course load does qualify students to apply for federal student loans.

Both the University and the School of Psychology and Counseling have privately endowed scholarships available. You are encouraged to examine these and consider applying.
