Friends,

The semester is off to a wonderfully creative start. Several Regent University alumni volunteered to inspire us with Christian music and a specially choreographed worship dance performance during our special event on Tuesday of this week. *

In the weeks ahead, we are planning more special events that include outside speakers, artists, and performances in theater, cinema television, dance, music, and other fields.

One of our goals here at the School of Communication & the Arts is to encourage creative and redemptive activities inside and outside of the classroom. If you would be willing to participate with other students in forming a worship dance team, special music, street performances, skits or other ideas with a redemptive edge, please join me for light lunch and organizing discussion on Friday, January 21st in the Dean’s Suite conference room. RSVP Audrey O'Grady by 10am Friday, Jan 21 (226- 4916)

If you did not get a chance to join us on Tuesday, you may click on the link to your right to watch a streaming video of our school’s special event.

Shalom,
Michael Patrick
Dean

  AEGIS AWARDS

The School of Cinema-Television won two Awards of Excellence at the 2004 Aegis Awards Competition.

"SYN" directed by Ben Chavda, produced by Judy Marr, with executive producer Andrew Quicke, a story of a post-apocalyptic world where the zealots try to eliminate the Syn. This film is in the high-tech style of box office winner "The Matrix."

"THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT" directed by David Selle, produced by Andrea Dunbar, with executive producer Andrew Quicke is a gentle story of an abused wife who is comforted by a Christ-figure at the gas station.

This is the 58th Regent winner produced by Professor Andrew Quicke. In 2003 he also produced Aegis Award of Excellence winner "Removal of Innocence," a film of the Civil War directed by Stephen Walker and produced by Judy Murphy. The documentary "All of Us" was an Aegis Award of Excellence finalist and was also shown on WHRO television.

WHAT ARE THE AEGIS AWARDS?
"The Aegis Awards were founded over a decade ago by an independent group of directors and producers that had grown skeptical of other award competitions that seemed to be judged by people that had no actual experience doing the creative work that they are supposed to be judging. This group agreed that the opinions that matter most are the opinions of their peers. The Aegis Awards have continued to grow each year. More and more professionals are coming to the conclusion that the only honor that matters very much is the recognition that comes from one's peers for a job well done."

Com News
- Congratulations to Alison English, a Ph.D. (ABD) student in Communication Studies, who has written a scholarly research article, “The Clarke County (Alabama) War Memorial: Kairos and Chronos United in the Sacred Commemoration and Contemplation of Five Wars”, which has been published in the December 2004 issue of The Journal of American Culture. The article focuses on the visual aspects of the Clarke County War Memorial in Jackson, AL and evaluates the memorial using two scholarly rhetorical methods: Sonja K. Foss’s Visual Rhetorical Schema and Valerie Peterson’s Rhetorical Criticism of Visual Elements. The article also considers the importance of common human experience in the specific act of public memorializing and the significance of the place in which that public memorializing occurs.
Journalism

- iVoice started last semester in JRN 630, Broadcast News Program Producing, as a student run broadcast program.  iVoice features news talk where the typical box format is something of the past.  The iVoice name concept derives from the merging of the public's (your) voice and information.
Look for iVoice on The Standard Report the first week in February.

-Online and on campus students in the Fall 2004 course, Feature Writing for Publication, have published a book of short stories called "Stories."  Each student contributed 2 stories to the volume and in a collaboration put everything together.  If interested in reading or securing a copy of the book contact Professor Swaffield.

-  If interested in becoming a writer for The Standard Report contact Andrea Hicks.
