Concentration: Script & Screenwriting
SCA Alumni, Michelle Hoppe-Long
Michelle Hoppe-Long graduated in 2002 with her MFA in Cinema-Television with a major in script & screenwriting. An award-winning director, actor and playwright, Hoppe-Long began her journey at Regent in 1995, when she enrolled as a double major in the master's program for acting/directing and script & screenwriting. After completing her master's work in 1997, she continued at Regent to work towards her terminal degree.
Hoppe-Long chose Regent after initially attending a large state university, where she realized that she was looking for an extra component in the pursuit of higher education. "I needed a place with like-minded people," she says, "those who loved and understood the power of the arts but also understood the (moral) responsibility that we have for what we put on the stage. I wanted a graduate school that would challenge me to think about my faith, my choices and provide an environment for robust dialogue. I found that at Regent. The amount of hands on-training I received at Regent was incredibly valuable. I truly learned there that the possibilities are limitless and that we are only hindered by our own fears and lack of imagination."
Hoppe-Long currently serves as the director of Fine Arts at Charlotte Christian School, a private college preparatory institution in Charlotte, N.C. There, she oversees 16 arts faculty and staff in the areas of band, broadcasting, choir, drama, dance, film, orchestra and visual arts. Named the "North Carolina K-12 Theatre Educator of the Year" in 2009, and "best director" at the Southeastern Theatre Conference high school play festival, she directs productions and instructs several classes, including a drama team that won the state theatre festival in 2008 and 2010. She and her husband, Bruce, are currently promoting their professional theatrical production, By Grace, about Grace Kelly for which Hoppe-Long wrote the book and lyrics.
"My learning experience at Regent shaped who I am," she says. "Christian leadership to change the world isn't just a tag line at Regent, the professors and students live it—and I am consistently humbled by the impact being made by Regent graduates across the world."
